Santorum hears Satan in U2 song "Vertigo"
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/theblog/archive/tom-gilroy/please-god-put-santorum_4627.html

In a recent promotional trinket for Part I-- a press release cleverly designed to look like a book entitled, ‘It Takes A Family’--our Righteous Asshole tripped over his dragging forearms and attacked Bono as Satan. Whoa, red flag. Read it again, out loud. Bono as Satan. Bono, a man whose body of work as a lyricist could reasonably be described as a 25 year conversation with God. The guy who first toured America literally carrying a Bible. You know, the author of those satanic screeds ‘Love And Peace,’ ‘Peace On Earth,’ and even ‘Wake Up Dead Man’ about the second coming of Christ. The man who traveled the globe quoting so much Scripture combating AIDS and relieving debt in Africa he made the Pope chuckle, Jesse Helms cry, and was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize.

Bono as Satan. Suddenly a town that forbids teenagers from dancing doesn’t sound so implausible. Does anybody smell remake? I’m hooked! Bring on the branding!

Let’s check instant replay, from Santorum’s press release, er, ‘book’:

When I listen to the rock group U2’s latest hit “Vertigo,’ which criticizes the dizzying culture around us, a chill goes through me when I hear Bono sing, in a Satanic voice, ’All of this. All of this can be yours—just give me what I want and no one gets hurt.”

Personally, I’ve never heard the voice of Satan; he’s never spoken to me, but clearly he has to Santorum, and only the Dark One himself knows why he chose the Senator from Pennsylvania or what he said, though I would imagine it was something truly demonic, like ‘go into politics,’ or ‘keep the haircut.’

not that this little fact would mean anything to High Inquisitioner Santorum. :grr:

17. Wow, the first I remember of U2
was when they began playing "Gloria" on MTV. In all these years I never thought it was about God (and obviously never listened to it too closely).

I try to sing this song
I, I try to stand up
But I can't find my feet.
I, I try to speak up
But only in you I'm complete.

Gloria
In te domine
Gloria
Exultate
Gloria
Gloria
Oh, Lord, loosen my lips.

I try to sing this song
I, I try to get in
But I can't find the door
The door is open
You're standing there, you let me in.

Gloria
In te domine
Gloria
Exultate
Oh, Lord, if I had anything, anything at all
I'd give it to you.

Gloria
In te domine
Gloria
Gloria.

10. to be fair,
I think he's suggesting Bono is simply assuming a character, not that he is himself Satanic. In context, he does claim to agree with the song's message.

If you go around looking for Satan in everything, you are probably going to see it. Sort of like that "Subliminal Seduction" book back in the 70's.

21. from a reviewer......
It's an open secret that U2 is the greatest Christian rock band in the world, . . . “Vertigo”: "Your love is teaching me how to kneel." And from the bridge: "All of this / All of this can be yours / Just give me what I want / And no one gets hurt" - an allusion to Satan tempting Jesus with all the kingdoms of the world. . . .

Santorum obviously hasn't a clue. But then we knew that!

How do you draw that conclusion from the quote you gave? Santorum's a nut case generally, but the quote from the review supports his interpretation of the lyric.

31. Read Santorum's quote again, without all the surrounding editorial
How do you figure? I'll admit I haven't seen Santorum's "press release" in its entirety, but based on the quote in the HP, there's absolutely nothing in Santorum's words indicating that he believes U2's music is Satanic.

There's plenty to rant about when it comes to Santorum. Bashing him incorrectly over this quote just makes us look incredibly dumb.

23. What a hypocritical, hate-spewing lunatic
I loved this line too 'The Senator From a Place Called Faith.’

Not only is the title of the book a slam on Hillary's "It takes a village" quote but the above slam is on Bill's "I believe in a place called Hope."

Rick, get over the Clintons!!

24. READ SANTORUM'S QUOTE: for once, no need to bash him on this one
Edited on Mon Jul-25-05 01:45 PM by ColonelTom
When I listen to the rock group U2's latest hit "Vertigo," which criticizes the dizzying culture around us, a chill goes through me when I hear Bono sing, in a Satanic voice, "All of this. All of this can be yours—just give me what I want and no one gets hurt."

I can't believe I'm going to defend Rick Santorum here, but he did interpret the song as "criticiz(ing) the dizzying culture around us," and that Bono uses "a Satanic voice" (i.e., not Bono's normal singing voice) to sing the lines in question. Bono's lyrics have often touched upon the struggle between spirituality and the pleasures/vices of the modern world. I think Santorum's characterization of "a Satanic voice" is a little over-the-top, and I don't personally think Bono's trying to either extol or condemn modern culture in this song. But Santorum's not completely out in left field with his interpretation of the lyrics here. There's no reason to interpret this as an attack on "Bono as Satan."

28. Agreed...
This looks like it may very well be a bit of spin on the HP.

I have not yet found any referrence to whether or not Santorum has condemned either U2 or the song in question.

He just stated his personal reaction.

29. I remember seeing a fundie bunch on tv criticizing rock music
They were beating up on an Eagles song and this screechy-voiced woman said "Listen to the words in that "Hotel California". "You can check out any time you like, but you can never leave". They're talking abvout Hell and they're trying to get kids to believe in Satanism" or words to that effect. Hey lady, the song doesn't say how wonderful Hell is, it's saying it's a terrible place. Jeez.
