So Gonzales gave White House 12 hours to destroy documents?
...and this man is now our attorney general? God help us.

This cozy little item appeared on page 12 of my local.

1. Could this fact have been intentionally eked out of Gonzales
to head off a firestorm when the prosecutor or someone else officially charges obstruction of justice? Were documents lost/deleted/destroyed? The rumored perjury charges could be due to discrepancies in the testimony of the various witnesses. Destruction of documents could be the basis for obstruction of justice charge rumors. Of course, this is all conjecture. I want to make it clear that I am just thinking out loud.

2. You think out loud all you want 'cause I'm right there with you.
I think it's all CYA (cover your ass) right now in the WH. Why do you think * is on a month long vacation starting today?

As Schultz would say, "I know nothing!"

8. It would be great to monitor the phone conversations and visitors to the
Crawford WH during the Preznit's annual month long break. Something tells me he'll be a lot more concerned about what's going on in DC than he was in August of '01 when he received the PDB that said 'Bin Laden Determined to Attack Within the United States.' I always get nervous when Jr. begins his August 'holiday'. What will they try next? They will probably be strategizing as to how they can beat this 'little story that could' known as Treasongate in Crawford, and seems to me, who he meets with or talks with during the month should be carefully watched if it's possible.

It's hotter then all get out here in August. If I had a months vaca    in August, I'd get the heck out Texas. Further proof he's an idiot!

34. I've asked the same questions since the dimson was selected.
The only good part about it is he could easily have a heat stroke clearing brush in Crawford. I'm originally from Texas and I NEVER consider visiting in August - I usually wait til November and it can still be hot then. He really is stupid.

3. I recommended this because...
*this* is the headline that should have been written.

Instead, people have entirely benign titles such as "Gonzales told Card" -- of course he did, he was required to.

The point is that Gonzales gave Card a heads-up and then sent in the formal notice 12 hours later.

I just called Biden's office and asked if Joe thought Gonzales is
"the real deal" now? I think that this is an on-going conspiracy working on multiple fronts with dozens if not hundreds involved.

5. This was big news when it happened. I remember my first thought was
that there must have been a shredding party.

Here is a letter to Ashcroft from Sen. Chuck Schumer regarding this. It is dated September 30, 2003 and it is about the preservation of evidence.

7. for the benefit of people who just started coming to view DU and learn
let's keep this kicked awhile. Most of us saw the report of this when it happened and we knew what it meant. But DU is a learning experience and a new one for lot and lots of folks who are now getting involved because of the ripple effect.

Let's help them catch up on what they may have missed due to the complicity of MSM with neocon spin.

Keep it :kick: cuz the thread title says what is important to get across to more people.

13. I am still surprised gonzales answered that question
on TV. I'm sure he had already told Fitzgerald but would have expected the "can't talk about an ongoing investigation" line when questioned in TV interview.

This becoming a big deal is better late then never, but it would have been so much better early on.

17. It actually made front page on my local - genuine shocker!!!
The paper does a decent job of impartiality with its reporting, and guest commentaries run the gammut from far left to far right. But when you see the LTTE from so many who rant and rave every time Molly Ivans's latest gets printing (about once a week, I'd guess), its not surprising to learn that East Tenn is a strong Repug area in an already red state. Still, the Gonzales delay made the bottom of page one this morning.

Do I dare get my hopes up?

Oh what the hell, here goes: :woohoo:

19. This was my and Sen. Schumers' objection to Gonzales as AG.
The torture stuff is bad, but his involvement in this case made him absolutely unfit to be AG, something that the majority of Senators seemed to forget during confirmation. I even called CSPAN to complain that as AG, Gonzales would be the WH Counsel rather than a real AG.

21. One of many reasons
I opposed his confirmation as attorney general. I ranked obstruction and conspiracy in the Rove Affair just below his efforts to make it acceptable for War Criminals to run our government. Yet there was not a peep during his confirmation hearings about this well publicized delay, which was odd considering it was publicly reported 48 hours before that an investigation was imminent. They must have really needed that extra 12 hours.

27. Orange Alert Anyone
Let's try to guess the wording of the likely elevated terror alerts just before the grand jury releases its indictments. What targets can they make up that the terrorist will supposedly be threatening this time...bridges again? Film studios? Shopping malls? Kitten and Puppy rescue shelters? No doubt the threat will certainly be "the most serious and dangerous chatter we've had to date....more chatter than before 9/11".

Watergate really was a third-rate burglery; the cover-up got Nixon in the end.

This is about treason, and before it's over the cover-up here will be the least of this administration's problems.

40. The 12 hour gap? Actually there was MUCH MORE TIME to shred those papers
Read this thread:
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=104x4194532
Thread title: I LOVE DU-from the archives-WH was notified SEPT. 26- 4 DAYS TO OBSTRUCT!!

And then this thread (and don't miss the Conyers entry at he Huffington Blog in the first reply):
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=104x4196003#4196615
thread title: CIA letter to Rep Conyers; Jan 30 2004 -- White House had 67 days to align

I believe the infamous 12 hour gap is just a red herring to distract from the REAL lead time that the WH had - 2 months of it! They probably didn't do anything during that last 12 hours because they were already finished. And if the investigation focusses on those 12 hours only, they will be wasting their time.

Why didn't the media do what DUers and Rep Conyers did and check those headlines from that time frame? They just took the 12 hour bone from Gonzales and ran with it.
