14. They were talking about Rove
and they brought up Kerry leaking someone's identity (to his credit, Hume said Kerry did it 'inadvertently'). Then one of the other puundits mentioned Sandy Berger.

16. This is the same story about the Bolton hearings
and Kerry giving the name of an agent (except that this name is in clear on the CIA website and therefore he was not giving anything).

But the right has been using that again and again to say that Rove did not do anything, even if it has been debunked previously.

18. I don't know all of the details, but,,,
Edited on Mon Jul-18-05 06:03 PM by girl gone mad
the wingnuts have been talking about this one for a couple of weeks.

Apparantly, Kerry was reading from a document during some senate hearings and read the agent's name aloud.

It's just a ploy to distract.

Edited to remove some inaccurate information.

This is ridiculous -- it's like a schoolyard: "Well, CLINTON STARTED IT!"

And, BTW, the last time I checked JOHN KERRY ISN'T IN THE WHITE HOUSE! Why do they think this has ANY bearing on what Rove did to protect his lameass boss?

DID SENATORS BLOW A CIA AGENT'S COVER? NO.
By Michelle Malkin · April 11, 2005 11:46 PM

Mentioned this question briefly in the Boltonblogging post below. There's plenty to criticize John Kerry for, but this isn't one of them. The Associated Press now asserts that both Sen. John Kerry and Sen. Richard Lugar "may have blown" a CIA agent's cover during the Bolton hearings. (Lugar mentioned the name in his opening statement; Kerry dropped the name during questioning.)

Well, did they or didn't they blow it? Don't just rely on AP. Arms Control Wonk , the blog of Research Fellow Jeffrey Lewis at the Center for International and Security Studies at the University of Maryland School of Public Policy, provides four previous media citations of the agent's name--all which make public reference to the agent, Fulton Armstrong, and the specific intelligence controversy at issue--dating back to September 2002.

So, how come the AP reporter wrote this?

Committee Chairman Richard Lugar, R-Ind., and Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass., both mentioned a name, Fulton Armstrong, that had not previously come up in public accounts of the intelligence flap.

And how will all of these newspapers that picked up the AP story square the reporter's assertion with those previous media citations?

Update: The Washington Post also ran AP's story.

19. Debunked. He's referring to Fulton Armstrong.
Fulton Armstrong's bio was already online:

"Fulton Armstrong, National Intelligence Officer for Latin America, National Intelligence Council
Fulton T. Armstrong was appointed National Intelligence Officer for Latin America on 1 June 2000. Previously Mr. Armstrong served as Chief of Staff of the DCI Crime and Narcotics Center (CNC). Prior to that, he served two terms as a Director for Inter-American Affairs at the National Security Council (1995- 97 and 1998-99) and as Deputy NIO for Latin America (1997-98).

Mr. Armstrong began his government career in 1980 as Legislative Assistant and Press Secretary to US Representative Jim Leach. In 1984-95, he served as analyst, political-economic officer, and manager specializing in Latin America in the both the intelligence and policy communities.

Prior to joining government, Mr. Armstrong worked four years as a reporter, editor, and translator in Taiwan. He earned his B.S. in Linguistics and Spanish at Georgetown University in 1976. He is fluent in Spanish and Mandarin Chinese.

http://mediamatters.org/items/200504120007

The agent he supposedly "outed" was listed as an intelligence officer for the CIA on official government websites months before Kerry mentioned them, as well as being on a 2001 conference schedule put out by the National Intelligence Council, as an intelligence officer that reports to the director of Central Intelligence.

<snip>
At least one right wing blog is suggesting Sens. John Kerry and Richard Lugar blew the cover of a CIA operative referred to as "Mr. Smith" at today's Senate Hearing. The person they referred to was Fulton Armstrong.

Only Fulton Armstrong has been a publicly identified intellgence officer for years. He was the CIA's national intelligence officer for Latin America. Kerry didn't out anything. Even the story about him being forced out of the CIA has been in the media. From Salon:
