Who Did Shrub Pardon in TX?-------Henry Lee LUCAS
Yes, Shrub sent hundreds to their swift, GONZALES-expedited deaths, including one of his own Born-Aginners whom he ridiculed without dignity (his OR hers). But WHOM did he find to qualify for his deep-thought "compassion"?--------one of the most notoriously GUILTY serial killers of all time.

He said, "If we're going to send somebody to their death, we've got to be sure they're guilty." (paraphrase from memory) Sound familiar?---sounds like what he's saying about ROVE right now---let the system work, let the investigation play out, etc.

Henry: Portrait of a Bush Supporter
Although he said he was anguished by the decision, in an interview in Talk magazine, writer Tucker Carlson described Bush mimicking the woman's final plea for her life. "'Please,' Bush whimpers, his lips pursed in mock desperation, 'don't kill me.'" - Time Magazine

The man who mocked Karla Faye Tucker sure picked his moments.

As Governor of Texas, George W Bush notched 152 - count -em! - confirmed kills. A personal best, until 9/11. His giddy impression of Tucker (#58) even got under the skin of scary Republican presidential candidate Gary Bauer, who said "I think it is nothing short of unbelievable that the governor of a major state running for president thought it was acceptable to mock a woman he decided to put to death." ....

...Henry was the recipient of Governor Bush's sole pardon,... ....

Should we take Bush's word, that although "Henry Lee Lucas is unquestionably guilty of other despicable crimes...there is enough doubt about this particular crime that the state of Texas should not impose its ultimate penalty by executing him"?

6. Wow! Interesting! Know What Would Blow Shrub Out of the Water?
If a witness would come forward with proof if he ever ghoulishly went to see any of the executions he expedited---all of those minority, mentally-impaired, incompetently-defended people.

8. I don't think * pardoned him.
I believe with a pardon that the person is released from prison. I'm pretty sure that this Lucas fellow died in prison.

And the specific pardon is documented. There are times when we've got to let documentation overrule what might make sense to us otherwise. As in, let my snarkiness here be overruled by saying, "Welcome to DU, pard."

10. Thanks for the welcome UTUSN
I've been doing some research because this has interested me a bit AND because I don't have much else to do this morning.

It seems that there has been some misunderstandings. According to what I could find (see the link below), * actually pardoned 20 people. Those were not capital offenses. What * did in the Lukas case was commute the sentence.

This info is from the National Coalition to Abolish the Death Penalty website.

11. Point Smoothly Taken. I Learn at DU Every Day
"(A commutation is the executive limitation of a sentence, usually to prison time already served or, in a capital case, to life imprisonment; a pardon is an official release from a penalty, can be full or conditional, and can occur during or after a sentence has been served.)" -----from your link.

13. What you have to understand about Texas is...
that the Governor CANNOT pardon anyone or commute a sentence by himself. Probably the only state where that is true.

I don't remember the name of the Governor that caused the problem, but one of them was caught selling pardons out of the back door of the statehouse, so the Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles was created.

This board takes clemency appeals and votes on them, sending their opinion to the Governor. I'm not postive, but he might be able to ignore the recommendation and let the original sentnece be carried out, but he definitely cannot pardon or reduce sentences without their approval. The most the Texas Governor can do is call for a 30 day stay of execution while a new appeal is filed.

So, although I am convinced Shrub gets wood at the thought of an execution and wouldn't call one off if it was up to him-- it was never up to him.

7. One of those murders must have been a political hit
Bush* repaid him for the "hit" Probably an investigation would provide the proof, but
