2. They're Not Buying...It's The Other Way Around
Disney's probably paying Sirius for the channel or it's part of a bigger one with other ABC/ESPN/Disney stuff.

Those channels on your satellite radio are like real estate (same for cable TV channels). They're bought and sold to the highest bidders.

AAR got a sweeter deal with XM...so it worked out for them as well.

NEW YORK, July 13 (Reuters) - Sirius Satellite Radio Inc. <SIRI.O> Chief Executive Mel Karmazin is considering a bid for Walt Disney Co.'s <DIS.N> ABC Radio unit, the New York Post reported on Wednesday.

7. That's Corporate...Not The Channels...
The intimation of the O.P. is that Sirius was buying Radio Disney...this is a proposed deal for the entire ABC Radio operation...not satellite but ALL their properties, including ESPN Radio, WLS, WABC, KGO and many other pieces.

This deal has been brewing, as have others, for a while. Mel's anxious to get back into the radio game for Howard Stern. Here's a way he can get a ready-made network of owned stations in major markets.

4. Does XM have the full, live AAR schedule?
Sweet deal or not, if they don't the listeners are getting screwed. I was a faithful Sirius AAR listener until last week.. I just want to have an option available where I can listen to an unmolested AAR schedule.. Short of streaming, I can't because of AAR's "sweet deal".

8. It's What Will Keep AAR Going...
In their first year, AAR was just begging to get on these birds. They were able to work some real quick deals and that's why they got on and were at the mercy of both XM and Sirius as to how much of their programming and advertising was carried.

I've never had either service and have no desire for them. But this was a move AAR took to strengthen themselves since now they have a guaranteed channel and a greater cut in advertising revenue.

Unfortunately you're stuck with a contract and it's unfortunate neither AAR or XM have come up with a deal to bring you over.

11. Also - AAR has their own advertising, it is run on their satellite as well
as their broadcast signals. They do not share in XM advertising dollars any more than they share in the advertising dollars used by local radio stations when the AAR system breaks for all local news/advertising/etc.

6. No, actually the satellite provider pays them, such as the millions
Edited on Sat Jul-16-05 01:30 PM by ET Awful
that Sirius paid for Howards Stern, etc.

It's just another in the long list of content that Sirius invested money in instead of AAR.

It kind of sucks, but that's the way it is.

Obviously Sirius's programming directors decided that it was wiser to get NASCAR, Martha Stewart, NFL and Disney than it was to get AAR.

I had Sirius since the day AAR went on the air, and I still have a receiver, but I decided to follow AAR to XM because I need my Morning Sedition fix in the AM :)

9. It Depends On The Program/Channel
I'll use Cable TV as a model...works almost the same way.

Your local system wants HBO or an exclusive channel. It know it can sell it and will pay for itself...they'll pay for that channel. Just like XM feels Howard Stern will bring them lots of revenue, thus his show is bought.

Most other deals are barters, trades and sales. It's like your cable system sure doesn't pay for Home Shopping or any of the religious channels. They pay to be on there...and this is kinda simple. There's all sorts of schemes these companies use to make money or get access to your money.

Cheers...

10. Actually, what happens is this
The cable provider pays the content provider in order to obtain the content. The content is what intices new subscribers which is where cable providers make their profit.

In this case, Sirius paid money for NFL, paid money for NASCAR, paid money for Disney, paid money for Stern, etc. They did not, however, pay money for AAR.

Cheers.
