Paris city hall will not honour Scientologist Cruise
http://news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/afp/20050712/en_afp/afpentertainmentfrance_050712114237

The Paris city hall has pledged not to make US actor Tom Cruise an honorary citizen because of his membership of the Church of Scientology. In a debate late Monday, the Socialist-controlled municipal assembly approved a resolution "never to welcome the actor Tom Cruise, spokesman for Scientology and self-declared militant for this organisation."

Last month on a promotional tour for his film "War of the Worlds," the 43-year-old star chose the Eiffel Tower to propose to girlfriend Katie Holmes. He was also made an honorary citizen of the southern French city of Marseille.

Like many other European governments, the French authorities view Scientology -- founded in the United States in 1954 by science-fiction writer L. Ron Hubbard -- as a dangerous cult.

Cruise was described as a "sect-symbol" by a Socialist deputy.

1. France and Germany are particularly unfriendly to the
"church" of Scientology. They have been for years.

I think maybe they took a look at the ideas the "church" has about infiltrating and taking over government and decided it wasn't welcome. . . . well that and the numerous people that have been brainwashed, defrauded, or killed simply because they became involved with the "church."

10. The US is largely unfriendly too, we just have the first ammendment
that greatly limits government intervention in anything that can pass itself off as a church.

11. The only reason they can pass themselves off as a "church" is because
they were able to coerce the IRS into giving them tax free status. Of course this was after Hubbard's wife and others were convicted of breaking into IRS offices.

12. And nobody critisizes them loudly because they terrorize critics.
Long drawn out lawsuits
Death threats
Blackmailing
Smear campaigns

The scientologists are a ball of fun.

6. Isn't he like an OT 8?
According to $cientology, he should be able to wipe France, and most of Europe, off the map.

Yet he couldn't make Far and Away a hit...
