18. ooooh, I am fuming!
I sent an email-
I was outraged today to hear anchor Kyra Phillips label the investigation into Karl Rove's leak a "smear campaign." The "smear campaign" was Rove's attempt to discred Wilson for exposing the false intelligence Bush used in his State of the Union (referring to Iraq's attempts to buy yellow cake). You should be ashamed of yourselves for echoing the talking points of Rove's lawyer. On a positive note, I am happy to see this story getting some coverage, but it is beyond discouraging to see your anchor propogating disinformation.

Here's my message to them:

CNN,

I'm concerned with your lack of credibility, CNN. I thought you were going to be reporting the news, and not conjecture or worse right wing lies.

if the president's press secretary wont say that Bush strongly supports and believes Rove, then your anchor person's comments were entirely off base. this isnt a SMEAR campaign. Its an ONGOING GRAND JURY CRIMINAL INVESTIGATION you two-bit hacks.

Please mark such comments as editorial as you do for Lou Dobbs. We are savvy viewers, and can see the difference, but labels ARE important, and her comments are not news, they are opinion, and worse yet, uninformed biased and non-reality based opinion.

Yes, the Liberal Media is defintely part of the problem for Amerika being seen as Imperialistic and Immoral by most of the world's population. It is time that Amerikan Media get rid of these Liberals and install objective anchors and reporters, like they have on Fox, in their place.

48. my feedback:
Your anchorwoman, Kyra Philips, took the liberty today of deciding that the scandal surrounding the outing of CIA operative Valerie Plame by someone in the White House, likely the President's advisor Karl Rove, was nothing more than a smear campaign being perpetrated by Democrats.

Please inform Ms. Philips, that, as a journalist, making such decisions is not her job, and that to do so is in fact not at all desirable, even if she says it cutely.

CNN has given up on journalism, though, it would seem.

In regards to Kyra Phillips, please tell her to refrain from making UNTRUE and biased comments. The slant is bad enough, but saying "it was an obvious SMEAR" is patently false. If the person reading this has any children and cares at all about the future of this country, PLEASE START REPORTING THE NEWS!! The facts as you find them-not stupid opinions! "

51. FWIW, Here's my letter
Dear CNN,

I waited an hour to write because I was so astonished to hear Kyra Phillips reporting about the Karl Rove situation (about 40 minutes after the daily White House Press Briefing ended) and make a comment (paraphrasing from memory) that, "obviously there's a smear campaign going on here."

It this type of "reporting" that leads me to avoid CNN for months at a time. Just when I thought you guys were getting back to reporting the news, one of your employees makes an ill-informed editorializing comment like this.

As far as the inquiry into the exposure of CIA agent Valerie Plame, I have watched the briefings yesterday and today on CSPAN and have read and observed the various reporting (or lack thereof) for the past 21 months or so and I can not see how any reasonably intelligent person could conclude that Karl Rove is the subject of a smear campaign. Indeed, given what has been reported about Rove in the past it is ironic since he is supposedly a master of the smear campaign.

Please leave the political opinions to the shows where people are tuning in for just that and put a muzzle on your "anchors" or "hosts" who are just shooting off their mouths based on their own political biases at best or echoing talking points of the various parties at worst.

At the very least I think Ms. Phillips or whomever wrote that bit of spin onto the teleprompter owes your viewers an apology. She may have won two Edward R. Murrow awards, but I'd be willing to bet he is spinning in the grave over that type of comment.

Sincerely yours,

Is this what people on your network say about real news?

This is ridiculous. The facts are coming from an investigation, not from the Democrats. Whoever did this committed treason at worst and at best is incompetent. Either way they endangered every American citizen by destroying our ability to find WMD's in terrorists' hands. The whole point of the Iraq war was supposedly about that, but whoever did this was more concerned with going to war with Iraq than they were about finding WMD's in terrorists’ hands.
Outrageous!

56. Kyra is the worst
This I know about, because I watched her when I was addicted to cable news. I have watched her since she arrived at CNN shortly after * stole it. She was armed and ready in 2001, long before 9-11 even, with her "I want to have *'s baby" sighing and cooing, and her steely gaze whenever Dems failed to worship the chimp. She would snap out things like "getting back to the FACTS" to any Dem who tried to criticize *, and ooh and ahh at the repukes. And this was in 2001. She didn't even have the excuse of 9-11. Then she cheerled with the worst of them up to the Iraq invasion, became "embedded" and filed puff piece after puff piece. She is worse that woofwoof and candy butterqueen. She is really, really bad. :puke: I just want to make it clear that this is nothing new.

I am outraged at Kyra Phillip's misstatement today that there is a "smear campaign" going on against Karl Rove. How that really reads is that she is one of those so-called journalists hoping to avoid the wrath or curry the favor of the Bush administration, and most likely, Rove himself.

Get a spine and some integrity, Ms. Phillips, or get off the air. Our country is sick of being bled to death by lies such as this.

66. Thanks so much for posting this; I heard it too and was aghast! Thanks
to your link, I responded as below: Kicking and nominating.

Re: Kyra Phillips

Kyra Phillips made the remark "obviously there's a smear campaign going on." I was barely listening until I realized she was talking about a smear AGAINST Rove, not, as is the usual case, BY Rove. Carl Rove is the Machiavellian Prince of political smear campaigns, dirty tricks and evil political machinations.

I am appalled at such a blatantly incorrect and politically slanted remark by someone who is to report the news in an unbiased fashion. I will no longer be watching ANY MORE CNN 'NON' NEWS COVERAGE, and I will urge friends and family to do the same. Lou Dobbs (and perhaps Anderson Cooper)will be my only exception, as he is the only one remaining at CNN with an ounce of integrity.

Kyra Phillips owes her viewers an apology, but I will no longer be viewing.

67. CNN scrubbed it from the transcript

Mediamatters

BOB FRANKEN (national correspondent): And just a nod from the president, but no answer, Kyra, when he was asked about Karl Rove today at a photo op. Kyra?

PHILIPS: Bob, definitely a major smear campaign going on. I mean, what's the chances of hearing from Karl Rove? Could he speak? Could he come forward? A lot of people said that could just clear the air if he just came forward and gave the facts.

FRANKEN: Well, the White House would respond that the Democrats are involved in something akin to a smear campaign. The Democrats would only say that they're only interested in good government. And the White House says that in the context of an investigation that's ongoing Karl Rove should not speak.

CNN transcript

(END VIDEO CLIP)

FRANKEN: Senator Clinton is nodding and everybody is waiting to see if the White House, Kyra, blinks on the Karl Rove matter.

PHILLIPS: So what's the talk, Bob, and what are you hearing from your sources? Will Karl Rove come forward and talk, like a lot of people are asking him to do?

FRANKEN: Well, the White House is making it clear that right now it is going to still to the confidentiality of the investigation. The lawyer for Karl Rove says he has talked to the grand jury but assured that Rove is not suspected of a crime.

Everybody is parsing his words very carefully. I think the thing to watch for is how the political winds blow.

Emphasis mine - oh the irony!

My latest missive to CNN:

Earlier today I sent you some feedback re: Kyra Philips comment on Live From... about Rove being the subject of a "smear campaign" being run by Democrats.

Looking at your transcript of the show, I am so glad to see that it never happened, that she never issued such a statement.

That was sarcasm, obviously. Were you planning on issuing a retraction, or perhaps even an apology, or were you just hoping it would be lost down the memory hole?

Seriously, CNN should either find a new motto, as the "Most Trusted Name in News" is now only defensible relative to the dishonesty of such other Corporate Media outlets such as Fox.

68. my email
Dear CNN,

Kyra Phillips needs to retract her comment that "there is definitely a major smear going on" regarding very measured and responsible comments that John Kerry made about Karl Rove.

I'm sure Phillips must have misspoke, but she needs to retract that comment.

She needs to retract the comment TOMORROW, and she needs to do it repeatedly.

Kyra Philips has always seemed like one of their better pretty faces. I can't recall ever hearing something as dramatically biased as this coming from her. Has she been spending time with Daryn Kagan?

She's stupider than a bag of hammers.

Kyra Phillips asked Ali's physician, "Doctor, does he understand why this war took place? Has he talked about Operation Iraqi Freedom and the meaning? Does he understand it?"

73. I rarely watch CNN
but today on my lunch break, I happened to turn on the tv just as she was making her ridiculous editorial comment. I didn't even know who she was until today. I had to double check the channel because I thought I must have been watching Faux.

79. here was my comment
Your anchorwoman, Kyra Philips, stepped out of her objective role of reporting the news to provide editorial commentary about her opinion on the scandal surrounding the outing of CIA operative Valerie Plame by someone inside the White House.

She suggested that today that the whole affair is nothing more than a smear campaign being perpetrated by Democrats.

Please inform Ms. Philips, that, as a journalist, making such decisions is not her job.

Has CNN given up on journalism?

If I wanted spin and bias with my news I would be tuning into Faux.
