Nearly 1,500 Republicans... I mean Sheep, Jump Off Cliff in Turkey
Edited on Sat Jul-09-05 12:32 PM by Quixote1818
ISTANBUL, Turkey (July 8) - First one sheep jumped to its death. Then stunned Turkish shepherds, who had left the herd to graze while they had breakfast, watched as nearly 1,500 others followed, each leaping off the same cliff, Turkish media reported.

In the end, 450 dead animals lay on top of one another in a billowy white pile, the Aksam newspaper said. Those who jumped later were saved as the pile got higher and the fall more cushioned, Aksam reported.

"There's nothing we can do. They're all wasted," Nevzat Bayhan, a member of one of 26 families whose sheep were grazing together in the herd, was quoted as saying by Aksam.

10. I was in this town today!!!!!
No kidding...I'm in SE Turkey in Van and spent a miserable 45 minutes in Gevaþ waiting for the stupid dolmuþ to fill up so I could go to Akdamar Island (which was also a disappointment...) Actually, if I had to live in Gevaþ I might take a header off the nearest cliff also.
Sorry for the shepherds though - those sheep were their livelihood, and they surely weren't wealthy to begin with. To be honest, though, the shepherds I've seen here aren't the most attentive, although I guess that's about to change quickly...Guess those shepherds are feeling pretty sheepish...

12. Maybe...
I would think they could recover the wool, but the meat might be harder as they might not have the refrigeration capacity and it is ghastly hot here so it will spoil quickly. Given the number of napping shepherds I've seen in the past few weeks, I'm not entirely surprised this happened....
