Has anyone discussed the BNP as a possible culprit in the London bombings?
We've ruled a number of folks out--such as the IRA. And recent history suggests Islamist terrorists as the prime suspects.

But, given that these bombs actually went off in or near Muslim neighborhoods in London, should we consider the charming lads from the BNP?

3. British National Party
neo-Nazi skinhead scum. A fringe element at best in British politics, thankfully.

4. British National Party. Fascists who hate blacks, Jews, and Muslims.
History of violence.

As I said, charming lads.

2. My understanding is that the area...
... with the bombings was the financial district of London. If someone were out to get Muslims, why not do it in those neighborhoods more directly?

Cheers.

5. Not if they wanted to increase hatred towards Muslims and encourage
acts of retaliation against Muslims.

7. Doubtful, but there is a possibility
the BNP (and Torries) might do better because of the attacks, especially if it is discovered that the attackers are al-Qeada, and even more so if they were immigrated citizens. (as I understand it, immigration in UK, and the rest of Europe) is a hot issue, more so than here).

8. I doubt it
but the people who did it have no respect for anyone as London is full of people from every religion and country, it's pretty much a world city.

9. It would be an entirely new tactic for them
I don't think the areas mean anything - it's central London, and, on rush hour transport, you'll get a wide mixture of everyone, including plenty of 'vanilla English' that are their target supporters.

The BNP hasn't been involved in explosive bombs before - fights, the occasional bit of arson, but not anything as planned as this operation. Remember, the members are really thugs who either like a fistfight, or pretend to (and do things like smashing windows); and the leadership is very calculating, but tries to look respectable. The nearest to the BNP setting bombs that has happened was the lone bomber who planted nail bombs in black and Asian areas, and a gay-friendly pub. But I don't think he was a member of anything - he was the classic 'nutter who sits in his bedroom' type.

So you're left with an attempt to make Muslims looks bad. There's no way of disproving that yet, but there's no evidence for it either; and it would have to be super-sophisticated - far more complicated than just doing the bombing. They'd have to cover their tracks perfectly, and lay some false trails. I don't think the BNP is intelligent enough to be able to do that. Most of them really are quite dumb.

10. Sounds reasonable. It's just that when I heard how amateurish and
lacking in skill this operation was, my first instinct was "BNP." Not the brightest bulbs in the chandelier, those lads.
