Here's What's Wrong In One Sentence

Every now and then, a politician lets slip a comment that shows us exactly what's wrong with our political system, and exactly how bought off our government really is. Today, it came from Maryland's governor, and he managed to boil it down into one sentence:

"(It is) bad policy because it...establishes that a state will dictate to businesses the type and level of health insurance they must provide for their employees." - Maryland Gov. Bob Ehrlich (R) on a proposal to force Wal-Mart to provide bare minimum benefits to its workers

That's right - in our bought-and-paid-for political system, the idea of making Corporate America fulfill any minimum responsibility to our country, such as making sure workers at the wealthiest company on earth aren't on welfare, is off the table. This, in a country that supposedly cherishes "family values."

1. In the US, corporate needs transcend human needs.

Only in a country like the United States, where corporations are considered more important than public health, could such an inane comment be made with a straight face by a politician.

6. Don'cha know? Humans only need jobs!

Free-time, health-care, hobbies, activism and vacations are are for the upper-class... not for us peons. We should be thankful that the corporations grace us with their precious jobs.

It's not like humans could find employment without large corporations. We would not be able to start co-operatives, small mom-and-pops, or utilities.

2. I admire his confidence that business will do the right thing.

Businesses view people as just another consumable item, the price of which is to be minimized. Further proof he is either a corporatist hack or a fool. I suspect he is no fool (I certainly could be wrong on that, though!)

3. A big part of what's wrong with our healthcare system

is that it is flawed to link that system to employment. It punishes those who work in small business, self employed by charging higher rates and is especially those who become unemployed. It discourages hiring and encourages layoffs and outsourcing.

But, offer any alternative and everyone freaks out from decades of demonizing "Socialized" medicine.
