I wonder how Chirac is feeling today.
Given his comments about British cuisine, he must feel a little like a heel today. Any comments from him?

3. Exactly.
Didn't take very long for this administration to exploit the attacks.

2. Why would he feel like a heel?
Sure, it's horrible that something happened in London, but that still doesn't negate their lousy cuisine. I mean, eel pie? Come on!

17. If he feels like a heel, he should visit the UK
where he can order blackened heel in clotted cream as a desert.

Personally, I feel like having quail for lunch, but since I'm not in France, I'll probably settle for a salad.

7. What a bizarre speculation
Why the hell should Chirac feel like a heel for having made a comment about British cuisine because some terrorists bombed their subway system today? Talk about apples and oranges -- this is the kind of comment which sounds like something straight out of freeperville and their irrational hatred of the French.

9. You're both right.
I mean, there is no reason Chriac should feel remorse or anything like that.

But maybe the OP wasn't attacking him or saying he should.

It could just be speculation. Wondering how Chriac feels, if this is something on his mind or if it hasn't even occured to him.

19. Then consider before you post
You authored an entire thread on this forum which by some convoluted logic tied Chirac's comments about British cuisine to the subway bombings in London. Where the hell did that come from, anyway, if not from the blue? If you don't want to be mistaken for a freeper, don't post like one.

21. NEVER did I tie it to the bombings.
Stop starting trouble, and stop assuming things. It would be like me calling someone's friend a loser and then they died. Would I still consider them a loser? Maybe. Would I feel bad I did it? Most definitely. Quit looking at everything in B&W and if you don't like my thread, don't fucking respond. Got it? Enough said.

22. You authored this thread...
... which smacks of the kind of irrational French-bashing I would expect from Faux News or Hate Radio.

Tell me, should George W. Bush feel badly today because his lies and an illegal war waged against Iraq fostered even more hatred and terrorism, real actions which might be directly related to the terrorists attacks today? Should George, perhaps, feel like the real heel here?

Why the hell should Chirac feel badly for the terrorist attacks today because he made some stupid comment about British cuisine? If you want a real heel look closer to home -- like Pennsylvania Ave.

24. Don't preach to me, Handpuppet!
The LAST thing I would do is place "blame" on Chirac. His comments were NOT just about cuisine, it was about Brits in general. Being of British stock, I feel insulted, and not about the cuisine (which does suck). STOP making this a big fucking issue. I don't need a lesson in etiquette and I DON'T need YOU to tell me what I can and cannot post. If I felt it was insensitive or missed the mark then I would recant. It was a general question, not an assumption that he was wrong. Now fuck the hell off.

So what?

This post and at least one you posted below belie your innocence about the true intent of this "speculative" thread. If you're pissed about Chirac or something he said about British culture or cuisine, that's one thing. But to use the terrorist bombings as a segue to do a little French-bashing, that's really the kind of thing I would NOT expect here.

So you'd like me to "fuck the hell off"? Would you like some Freedom Fries with that?

16. Under bushco, the chances of horrors happening on a daily
basis are a reality.

If we all held our tongues for fear of what might happen tomorrow, the world would be a very quiet place, especially when you can rest assured that something horrible will happen on a daily basis.

Bad Brit food is a given, like the sun rising in the morning. I wouldn't expect Chirac to opine that the sun won't rise tomorrow. Why should anyone feel remorse that expressed a given about Brit food?

37. French reaction

I would hope Chirac isnt prone to feel bad about something he shouldnt feel bad about.

Since when is making a cliche joke about a country before a terrorist attack you had no idea would happen something to feel guilty about?

32. Can I just say that
the reason Chirac was making snide remarks about us Brits is that he is in a very tenuous position politically in France.

He is merely playing to the extreme right wing and Le Pen's fascists. If he can consolidate the right around his party they may be able to beat a badly split left at the next elections.

If he can't there is an outside possibility that the far right and the far left could form the two biggest factions with both centre groups shrinking. Potentially a Besancenot v Le Pen presidential run-off? Very interesting indeed.

27. Well, he gave a press conference from Scotland
but CNN cut away as he was explaining the need to continue the work at hand regarding poverty, to do some more "Terra! Terra"

He started out offering sympathy and solidarity.
He didn't mention "must stay the course on them terraist, to show our resolve to not take away our freedom who is on the march".

He spoke very slowly like he always does and which I find kinda annoying.

I really do wonder how he feels, but I don't think guilt is part of his feelings.

I am also not sure the reasons some countries didn't support the Iraq war were the right ones...

The only ones I trust to be right on the war, for the right reasons, are the millions of people who marched against it.

34. Well, I have to agree your OP can easily be misconstrued as misplaced
but I also find logic in the analogy in your post #21. I do think your hurt feelings clouded your judgment a little so as to pose a "coloured" question.

As a European, I feel things like "freedom fries" or the "chocolate summit" are very insulting.

So I felt insulted when even Randi Rhodes bashed the French, and can understand why you felt insulted by Chirac and why some posters found your question unappropriate.

I know that DU can be a paranoid place and you have to be ready for heated discussion. To be honest I don't think you're a .. well, you know :-)

Don't care too much, just let it sink :-)

PS: why I'm curious about Chirac's feelings is not in light of his remarks about the cuisine etc, but because I do think he's got to have mixed emotions when shit like this happens. No one in their right mind thinks terrorism (if that's what it is!) is OK, but he's got to have a certain "they had it coming and I told them so" feeling.
