Ashcroft changes his mind about pursuing toughest sentences
By now, you've all probably heard of John Ashcroft's plan to force federal prosecutors to pursue the toughest charges possible against criminal suspects. Plea bargaining will no longer be an option for the prosecutors.
The story was run on page 3A of USA Today on Sept 23, 2003. I won't post a link, because the SOB's at USA TOday just recently decided to start charging to view their online articles. I'll find a different paper to read that doesn't charge.

Ironically, in that same issue of USA Today, on page 8A, Ashcroft seemed to be abandoning his new policy.

From the short story, "Former Bush aid won't face charges"

'Federal investigators have concluded that President Bush's former telecommunications policy chief committed three ethics violations by allowing industry lobbyists to throw her a party. However, the justice Department has declined to prosecute Nancy Victory.
<snip>
Ten days after the catered party in her honor in October 2001, Victory urged a policy change benefiting telecommunications companies that helped pay for the $3000 event at her home. Victory said the hosts were friends who used personal funds. The inspector general found that their companies paid for the party.

I guess Ashcroft's new policy only applies to Democrats. Whoda thunk
