O.K. a quick review for the uninformed:
Gulf of Tonkin - 9-11 Threat of Communism - Threat of Terrorists Indigenous insurgents (Viet Cong, Mujadeen) Stay the course - ditto Massive military buildup - ditto Massive casualties - ditto Draft - Back Door Draft, but not for long
Those old enough to remember Viet Nam know this scene all too well. Iraq is like watching a bad re-make. Here are the major differences. Right now our government controls the flow of information coming out of Iraq, so that Americans don't get to visualize the blood and gore of war. In the 60's mainstream journalists were free to roam the battlefields and sent back daily pictures of how we were getting our asses kicked in the jungles of Viet Nam. But today, we have the Internet and Bloggers who can cut through the bull-shit lies that are thrown at us day after day. If we had a full blown military draft in place right now this war would have been over by now. Unlike Viet Nam, most Americans are untouched by this war. They have no buy-in so they have been slow to react. It is now first dawning on them that this war is a total clusterfuck. And many Americans are now starting to realize that the whole damn thing was orchestrated through lies and deceptions. We may accept alot of things, but we don't like being outright lied into a pre-emptive war.
When you write your elected officials, your newspaper editors, etc. remind them that we have witnessed this type of warfare before and we know how the story ends. This is sadly the next verse of the same old song.
