When have we here at DU been the best that we can be?
What issues have we helped bring to light? What stories have we helped get coverage? How about when we shared our hopes and fears before election debates? Or when we supported each other in "defeat"? Or when we even managed to reach into our hearts and wallets and help fellow DUers in need, whom most of us have not even met?

If someone visits this board, what would make them want to join us? Realizing that there are like-minded people, especially if there are few where they live, or even in their family? Finding support from the like-minded? Finding a place to vent? Laughing out loud, again and again, at the wit and cleverness of so many here? Being inspired by the awesome writing of some? Gaining information from those who find it in the press, and those dedicated souls who painstakingly dig it up themselves?

What are, as Lincoln put it, "the better angels of our nature"? And do we owe it to each other, and our cause, to call on them, imperfect and contrary souls that we are, as often as we can?

1. For me and one of the reasons I joined
under a different name then was telling what exactly had happened to me when I TRIED to vote in Nov.2000.Also,perhaps my finest moment came with my outing of Rush as a junkie-I had had enough and my bassist was his personal chef who helped him lose all the weight back then.He was pissing me off with his Hillary stuff and Little Dick stuff about Gephardt. My user name used to be Oustemnow, and as Casey Stengel once said-"you can look it up"-I contacted media too-a few days later the story about Wilma the maid (who I also knew)broke nationally. You guys heard it first from me.

4. Every day in the majority of our postings...
...If you read here the truth that flows through these pages without ever a recourse to lampooning, or satire, or cynicism or bitterness, you are NOT a liberal or a democrat....You are a Saint.Daily political backstabbing and pnac plotting and foul smelling mistruths are fed to us with our sole hope being just a handful of good and honest politicians (from BOTH sides of the aisle, recently) to lighten another hell like stroll thru what used to be a great nation....would I wish to be nobler in each and every piece I post, sure. Can I as a mortal human of human weaknesses and hubris...probably not. I'm sure Mother Theresa was great to know but I wouldn't want to be her....

I'm not Mother Theresa, and not calling for perfection. Sometimes I just think it's valuable to think about things from a new or different perspective.

12. You are correct and I think like any faction...
...we have our reasoned reactions and the occasional blind screaming pitbull who can not propose, but merely attack and destroy....They may not at times be helpful....A post on the subject of "Just how worthless a piece of shit is (fill in the blank) gains neither new supporters nor educates established posters....We should when possible turn that shit down a notch and when we HAVE to kick loose should attempt to do so with humor and wit, which most can admire, rather than vitriol-I can assure you a misinformed freeper can get every much as pissed as we....That said, educate and enlighten when you can, laugh or lampoon when the spirit moves you and rant when you MUST....But keep in mind that the site with the most ranting (need I name it) is not here and is NOT winning....

8. The September 11 forum is excellent
These are deep waters. There are a smaller number of people involved in this but there is a commitment to finding the truth of what happened that day which never ends. In this forum I find I read every word of each post, bookmark the links and follow up on them, and check back daily to see if someone has found the answer to a detailed question. There are a handful of "experts" in this forum who have helped me grasp the larger outlines of this mystery- after that one can sort through the details ourselves to make their own mind.

The "experts" don't agree with each other, but that's a good thing. The group is smarter than any one person.

Anyone who is interested in finding out the truth about September 11 will find that this forum is the place to learn to swim.

10. I'd say the 9-11 timeline and DU backing up Knight Ridder article on DSM
when Cspan tried to claim it was just an internet rumor. Everything changed after that day and the media coverage increased tenfold.

I'd also add when we worked together to expose electronic voting machines, before Bev turned into a money making venture.

And how we jumped in to help Andy.

11. The Wellstone diaries
also were very touching here-and all the hate from the other side was truly mind boggling-again of course being spearheaded by the Fat Junkie and his ilk-the guy's plane had just crashed and Freeperville was on fire
