Arnie's Secret Police*** National Guard sets up state intelligence unit
SACRAMENTO -- California's National Guard has set up a special intelligence unit intended to help local law enforcement deal with terrorist threats and integrate statewide investigations with international anti-terrorism initiatives, according to a newspaper report.

Guard officials say the new unit, established last year, will not violate long-standing rules barring the military from gathering information on American citizens.

Guard intelligence officers will have access to national security information that they can analyze and determine if details should be shared with state and local law enforcement, O'Neill said.

~snip~

"The National Guard doesn't need to do this," said Christopher Pyle, a former Army intelligence officer who helped expose a string of instances in the 1960s and 1970s, when the military collected information on more than 100,000 Americans. "Its job is not to investigate individuals, but to clear streets, protect facilities and help first responders."

1. Carrying on the traditions of Op. Cable Splicer, Op. Garden Plot, etc...
For a supposedly liberal state, California sure has a lot of trouble with proto-fascists running the state government...

3. Yes, somebody mentioned Operation Garden plot on the LBN thread
I had never heard of it.

Some of you boys and girls are the most informed whippersnappers Ive ever had the oppportunity to 'meet'. :) I'm very impressed and even more appreciative of the intellect I find here at DU.

With regard to California, it's quite a plume in someone's cap, and the Republicans are once again trying to divide and conquer our state, but Californians don't take kindly to fascism overall. That's been my experience.

Guard unit monitored peace rally

Published Jun 27, 2005 - 15:35:21 CDT.

A new California National Guard intelligence unit meant to help local law enforcement deal with terrorist threats tracked a recent protest co-sponsored by the Davis chapter of Code Pink: Women for Peace.

Guard officials have said the unit will not violate long-standing rules barring the military from gathering information on American citizens.

According to e-mail messages obtained by the San Jose Mercury News, however, top National Guard officials were involved in tracking the Mother's Day event, held at the Vietnam War memorial on the state Capitol grounds.

Natalie Wormeli of the Davis group helped plan the rally. This morning, she said felt both angered and saddened to learn that the protest was monitored by the Guard.

7. I'm happy to report....
Teachers, nurses, firemen, and union people are collectively reading the riot act to him wherever he goes. Personally, I'm amassing a large collection of pitchforks. Got any recipes for torch fuel?

Sorry, I wasn't trying to belittle the guard stuff. I think what Ahhnold and the guard are doing there is not right.

Like we need any more to get into the spying game. I thought that is what the FBI was for.

8. Yes, one whose entrance wasn't all that legal either.
Many immigration lawyers and a few bribes later, bothersome facts were swept under the rug and Arnie got his legal status.

10. Oh, but he legally entered the US on a visa....
that stated he could not work. His status changed the minute he engaged in work - his secret plan from the beginning - and should have been deported.

12. You've got it BrotherBuzz. Most European illegals do
not swim across the Rio Grande or sneak across the Sonora Desert, but do enter on a visitor's visa just like Arnold and they do find work. Many overstay their visas because they have jobs. It doesn't make their status and different just because they aren't Mexican.
