CNN Changes 'On the Story' for Relaunch June 24, 2005 By Anthony Crupi
CNN is revamping On the Story, slotting Christiane Amanpour in as host, adding a brace of male correspondents to the mix and moving the show over to a new time slot.
CNN will also add a studio audience and more international reporters to the On the Story staff in advance of its July 9 re-launch. As host, Amanpour will pull together an ever-evolving roster of global reporters, who will discuss the week's big events, leavening their conversation with raw footage and their own first-hand accounts of covering their particular beats.
The male anchors have not been identified, but CNN said that regulars such as Jane Arraf and Suzanne Malveaux would make the occasional appearance on the retooled show.
The changes are the latest in CNN president Jonathan Klein's ongoing programming offensive, as he seeks to pump up the network's international coverage and regain lost ratings ground from rival Fox News Channel. In his eight months at the tiller, Klein hasn't gained much ground; CNN averaged 610,000 U.S. prime-time viewers in May, down 16 percent from 727,000 a year ago, and less than half the 1.4 million that Fox News took in during the same period.
