1. Yeah, that's one the literalists like to avoid.
Had to be some incest going on if Adam & Eve were the only ones to start with.

15. incest is a pretty common theme in the OT, IIRC
I don't think that's much of a problem even for literalists (which most Jewish and Christian sects are not)

6. Being in the NYC area with nothing to do this weekend
maybe I should go to Billy Graham's crusade and ask around about this question.

4. Some comedian does a routine about this ... If Adam and Eve were the
first two people and had 5 children - 2 boys and 3 girls, then the brothers and sisters had to have been having sex for more people to be born.... The problem is ... the Adam and Eve story is a fairy tale so it doesn't really have to make sense.

5.  I've heard it explained this way:

That Adam and Eve were the FIRST inhabitants. That 'god' then populated the earth after them...

8. Steve
I saw on a fundie's sign once that God created Adam and Steve. So he must have knocked Eve up too.

21. I think you probably misread the sign. It

likely said "God created Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steve" -- a pretty catchy slogan for those opposed to same-sex marriage for religious reasons.

that religious DUers are like fundamentalists. Most of us don't take the Bible literally.

12. Don't confuse fundamentalism with religion
I'm not a christian, but if I was I wouldn't have to work hard to "explain" that. Being a christian does not entail having to take the whole of the Bible as literal truth!

16. The Creation Myth is a folktale
It did not rain for 40 days and 40 nights, the Caspian Sea flooded.

God did not create the universe in 6 days, he had billions of years to work out cosmic evolution.

My favorite thing to throw fundies is "If you beleive the Bible is literally true - then why do you worship Jesus as a God, when he never made claims to such?"

Look for it - Jesus never says "I am God, worship me."

But then again, I am more of a Unitarian than anything.

17. Even though I consider myself Christian and attend church
I doubt that what we call the Bible today bears much resemblance to what was originally written - and I don't just mean translating from Aramaic or Hebrew to English. I can't imagine that it hasn't been rewritten, edited, adulterated by politics of whatever era, etc.

I use the Bible much like the Jack Sparrow uses the Pirate Code -- more like "guidelines". The stories are downright scary and I don't think you need that to get the gist of how Christ wanted us to try to live.

18. Right.
It's a poem, a creation story. It is similar to one of Jesus's parables. People who take them literally, like people who dismiss them because of a detail like "where did Cain's wife come from?", miss the point.

19. Maybe the missing heirs came from here...
Genesis 6:2--That the sons of God saw the daughters of men that they were fair; and they took them wives of all which they chose...

6:4 There were giants in the earth in those days; and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare children to them, the same became mighty men which were of old, men of renown.

So the "sons of God" (plural) copulated with the "daughters of men."

Sounds like Polytheistic Perversion to me.
