--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The WMD Mirage: Iraq's Decade of Deception and America's False Premise for War
Craig Whitney, ed.

The United States relied on faulty intelligence in making the decision to go to war in Iraq. That's the case made by New York Times assistant managing editor Craig Whitney in his book, "The WMD Mirage: Iraq's Decade of Deception and America's False Premise for War." Mr. Whitney talks about his book at the Council on Foreign Relations in New York City and is joined in the discussion by Patricia Wald, Commissioner of the Committee on the Intelligence Capabilities of the U.S. Regarding Weapons of Mass Destruction; and Charles Duelfer, former head of the Iraq Survey Group. The panelists talk about the failures of the American intelligence community as well as the current state of WMD in Iraq.

Author Bio: Craig Whitney is assistant managing editor of the New York Times and the editor of "The WMD Mirage: Iraq's Decade of Deception and America's False Premise for War." He has worked for the New York Times as a reporter, European diplomatic correspondent, and foreign editor. Judge Patricia Wald served as assistant U.S. attorney general for legislative affairs during much of the Carter administration, on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit in 1979, and was chief judge of the court from 1986 to 1991. She was appointed to the Federal Appeals Court and after retiring from the court in 1999, she spent two years in The Hague as a judge of the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia. Charles Duelfer is a former head of the State Department's Center for Defense Trade, former Deputy head of the UNSCOM weapons inspection agency in Iraq, and in January 2004 he replaced David Kay as the leader of the Iraq Survey Group.

Cyberage Politics 101
Mobility, Technology, and Democracy

By Stephen E. Frantzich

Changes in lifestyles and technology have confronted modern American democracy with significant challenges. Traditional geographic ties to communities and elected officials have been disrupted by physical mobility. Democracy depends on active citizen involvement, which requires information. New technologies have changed the way individuals gather, use, and distribute information. The traditional bases of community and collective knowledge that motivate and facilitate political involvement are under unintentional assault. Citizens and political practitioners alike need to recognize these challenges and find ways to overcome them in a manner supportive of democracy.

Stephen E. Frantzich is Professor of Political Science at the U.S. Naval Academy. He has served as a consultant to C-SPAN, the U.S. Congress, the American Political Science Association, and a variety of foreign governments. An award-winning teacher, Professor Frantzich has also written on the impact of technology on politics and the role of citizens. Committed to the creative and judicious use of technology, two of his texts are now available in interactive format online. His recent books include The C-SPAN Revolution and Citizen Democracy: Citizen Activists in a Cynical Age.

5. The New New Left: How American Politics Works Today
On Saturday, June 25 at 2:15 pm
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The New New Left: How American Politics Works Today
Steven Malanga

Manhattan Institute fellow Steven Malanga says that the newest movement in liberal politics has rolled back reforms in major cities like New York, loses money at an alarming rate, and hurts the people it attempts to help. It does so through unions petitioning for living-wage laws (which he says drive businesses elsewhere) and instituting government reforms established by those who stand to gain the most from those reforms. In "The New New Left: How American Politics Works Today" Mr. Malanga outlines the ways in which the New Left has strayed from the visions of the New Left of the 1960s and how it continues to gain strength within the national Democratic Party.

Author Bio: Steven Malanga was executive editor of Crain's New York Business and was a finalist for the Gerald Loeb Award for Excellence in Financial Journalism. He is a senior fellow at the Manhattan Institute and a contributing editor to the City Journal where he specializes in urban economies, business communities, and public policy.

Return to Greatness: How America Lost Its Sense of Purpose and What It Needs to Do to Recover It
Alan Wolfe

Author and political science professor Alan Wolfe writes that America's focus on morality and purity has caused it to lose sight of what he calls a grander vision. Mr. Wolfe says that the idea of a long-term vision for America is a concept shared by Alexander Hamilton, FDR, and Abraham Lincoln. The author says that both liberal and conservative leadership are guilty of retarding America's potential for national strength and unity, by focusing instead on divisive political issues causing internal strife.

Author Bio: Alan Wolfe is the author of "The Transformation of American Religion" and "One Nation, After All" among others. He is currently a political science professor and director of the Boisi Center for Religion and American Public Life at Boston College.

Maps, Myths, and Men: The Story of the Vinland Map
Kirsten Seaver

Historian Kirsten Seaver talks about her new book, "Maps, Myths, and Men: The Story of the Vinland Map," at Stanford University in California. The author discusses the controversy over the authenticity of the Vinland Map that was first published in 1957. Ms. Seaver examines the debate from the type of ink used to the identity of the mapmaker. After the discussion, the author answers questions from the audience.

Author Bio: Kirsten Seaver is an American historian and the author of "The Frozen Echo: Greenland and the Exploration of North America, ca. A.D. 1000-1500."

Publisher: Stanford University Press 1450 Page Mill Road Palo Alto, CA 94304

A Brief Introduction to The Vinland Map

The Vinland Map purports to be a 15th century map depicting Viking exploration of North America centuries before Columbus. If genuine, the Vinland map is one of the great documents of Western civilization; if fake, it's an astonishingly clever forgery.

Since its announcement and publication in 1965 the Vinland Map has been in and out of favor. The initial publication, Skelton et al. The Vinland Map and Tartar Relation, trumpeted its authenticity. Then, in 1972, a scientific team headed by Dr. Walter McCrone reported that its ink contained anatase, a form of titanium which first appeared in ink during the 1920s. Twenty years later, in 1992, Dr. Thomas Cahill of UC Davis found anatase in a variety of medieval manuscripts and the question was reopened. In 1995 Yale released a second edition of the book, together with further articles in support of the map, even as scholarly opinion outside of Yale increasingly turned against it. Most recently, two studies, one on the parchment and another on the ink, seemed to many to point in different directions. The last word? Don't bet on it.

Welcome to Vinlanda: The Vinland Map on the Web.
This page explores the controversy surrounding the so called "Vinland Map," assembling some 100 pages on the topic from every corner of the web. Here you will find serious scholars pro and con as well as a bevy of quacks—all categorized and described. I've added a certain amount of material on the other, less dubious, sources for Viking activity in North America—the sagas and archaeological excavations at L'Anse aux Meadows, Newfoundland—and some general links on Scandinavian history.

27. Edward "lyin repug ho" Klein - The Truth About Hillary
See Media Matters review below..

On Sunday, June 26 at 11:00 am and at 11:00 pm
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Truth About Hillary: What She Knew, When She Knew It, and How Far She'll Go to Become President
Edward Klein

Author Edward Klein appears on the Jim Bohannon Show, a live radio call-in show, to discuss the life and political prospects of Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-NY). Mr. Klein is the author of "The Truth about Hillary: What She Knew, When She Knew It, and How Far She'll Go to Become President."

Author Bio: Edward Klein is the former foreign editor of Newsweek and former editor-in-chief of The New York Times Magazine. He is the author of several books, including "The Kennedy Curse" and "Farewell, Jackie."

from Media Matters

The truth about The Truth About Hillary: Edward Klein's attack book is poorly researched, poorly written, poorly sourced
Edward Klein's attack book on Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-NY), The Truth About Hillary, appeared in bookstores this week, having already taken serious hits for peddling unsubstantiated sexual innuendo and outright fabrications.

A Media Matters for America examination of The Truth About Hillary finds that Klein recycles long-debunked claims about the Clintons; relies on anonymous sources for much that isn't recycled -- more than 70 footnotes refer to unnamed sources; and is chock-full of misleading claims and outright factual errors. It's also marked by a juvenile obsession with sex and a reliance on "convenient rather than complete evidence" that are rapidly becoming the author's trademark.

Klein's anonymous sources run from the mundane (he footnotes an interview with "anonymous expert on campaign and finance laws" for a quote explaining how Clinton can raise money for other candidates -- a quote Klein could probably have found dozens of experts to say on the record) to the offensive (Klein writes a chapter about Bill Clinton raping Hillary Clinton, resulting in Chelsea Clinton's conception -- all based on a single "anonymous source who was with the Clintons in Bermuda.")

The text of the book itself tends toward sweeping conclusions with little evidence; Klein favors quick, negative descriptions of people, without evidence or examples to back them up, such as his early reference to Bill Clinton as "careless and corrupt." And he makes ridiculous attempts at folksiness throughout the book. Once he mentions a person's nickname, he often refers to that person by the nickname -- so Nancy Pietrafesa (whose name is misspelled in the book) is quoted as "Peach"; Dolly Kyle Browning as "Dolly." The reader is treated to more than 15 references to Hillary Clinton as "the Big Girl," as in, "Some of the staff felt that the Big Girl's extreme suspicion of people and their motives bordered on paranoia" and "The Big Girl and the President took breakfast in the kitchen" and, best of all, "The Big Girl blew her nose."

Abu Ghraib: Reflections in the Looking Glass
Michael Cannon, Jr.

Michael Cannon, Jr., former brigade chaplain for the 800th MP Brigade in Iraq, talks about the people involved in the Abu Ghraib prison scandal and the media coverage the scandal has received. Mr. Cannon argues that what happened at Abu Ghraib is a reflection of the decline in ethics within American society as a whole. He says that the media has presented a very narrow picture of what happened at the prison and has thus effectively mislead the public into thinking that the problem lies within the military or with President Bush. Mr. Cannon also talks about the recent decision in the Lyndie England trial and the overall war in Iraq. The talk was hosted by the Boiling Springs First Baptist Church in South Carolina. Includes Q&A.

Author Bio: Michael Cannon, Jr. is an ordained minister in the Presbyterian Church of America and has served in the military for over 20 years. Mr. Cannon served as brigade chaplain for the 800th Military Police Brigade in 2003. Part of the brigade at that time was assigned to guard Iraqi detainees at Abu Ghraib prison.

31. Buried by The Times - downplaying the Holocaust - did they?
History on Book TV

Buried by The Times: The Times and America's Most Important Newspaper
Laurel Leff

Laurel Leff argues that the New York Times downplayed the Holocaust in her new book, "Buried by The Times." The author explains that the newspaper, which she describes as the most influential American news source, failed at providing full and complete coverage of what European Jews endured from 1939-1945 by burying the lead and never printing the news on the front page. Ms. Leff contends that if different editorial decisions were made at the New York Times many lives might have been saved. This event was hosted by the Center for Jewish History in New York City.

Author Bio: Laurel Leff is a professor at Northeastern University. She worked as a journalist for 18 years and has served as an editor for both the Hartford Courant and American Lawyer Media.

Publisher: Cambridge University Press 40th West 20th Street New York, NY 10011

Review -

"Laurel Leff has written an exceptional study of one of the darkest failures of the New York Times--its non-coverage of the holocaust during World War II. How could the best newspaper in the United States, perhaps in the world, under-estimate and under-report the mass killing of more than 6,000,000 Jews? Read this book, which provides answers and in the process stands tall in scholarship, style and importance." --Marvin Kalb, Senior Fellow at Harvard's Shorenstein Center on the Press, Politics and Public Policy "This is the best book yet about American media coverage of the Holocaust, as well as an extremely important contribution to our understanding of America's response to the mass murder of the Jews." --David S. Wyman, author of The Abandonment of the Jews: America and the Holocaust "This important book answers--in a compelling fashion--some of the questions which have long been asked about the New York Times' coverage of the Holocaust. Probing far behind the headlines, Leff tells the fascinating story of how the Sulzberger family was rescuing its relatives from Germany at the same time that it was burying the story of the Holocaust in the inner recesses of the paper." --Deborah E. Lipstadt, author of Beyond Belief: The American Press and the Coming of the Holocaust "Laurel Leff has written an engrossing and important book about the abject failure of the world's most influential newspaper, The New York Times, to report on the Holocaust its owner and key figures knew was occurring. Her book tells us much about America at the time, the level of anti-Semitism, and the assimilationist desire of the Jewish owner of the Times to avoid stressing the unique Jewish nature of the genocide. It is part and parcel with the same mindset of the Roosevelt Administration. One can only wonder in great sorrow at how many lives might have been saved if the nation's and world's conscience had been touched by full and complete coverage by the Times of what remains the greatest crime of world history." --Stuart E. Eizenstat, former senior official in the Clinton Administration and the Special Representative of President Clinton on Holocaust-Era Issues. Author of Imperfect Justice: Looted Assets, Slave Labor and the Unfinished Business of World War II

The Plot Against Social Security: How the Bush Plan is Endangering Our Financial Future
Michael Hiltzik

The social security plan proposed by the Bush Administration is ineffective and its reliance on privatization is dangerous. This is what Los Angeles Times columnist Michael Hiltzik writes in his new book, "The Plot Against Social Security: How the Bush Plan is Endangering Our Financial Future." The author writes that the present social security system is not danger of running out of money any time in the next 75 years and that by changing the system, the retirement income for individuals would diminish significantly. Mr. Hiltzik writes that the social security issue has been highly politicized and needs to be re-evaluated with a more objective, economic approach.

Author Bio: Michael Hiltzik is the author of "A Death in Kenya" and "Dealers of Lightening." He is a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and has spent more than twenty years covering politics and finance for the Los Angeles Times, where he now writes a regular column.
