start coming up with reasons why it doesn't matter that he was. ;)

5. It makes a difference to me
Here's this perfect candidate, and now it turns out he votes Rethuglican? Why? Did he really believe in letting the religious right run the country? In Star Wars? In throwing the poor off welfare rolls? Against health care? Anyone who has EVER thought that way is highly suspect in my mind to run this country.

So members of Democratic Underground, why do you keep saying he used to be Republican? Where is your proof?

He has said that he was a Republican in the early 80's and voted for Reagan (like most of America)

Who cares, he is on our side now. Not all the way on our side, but enough for me.

had to chuckle at the wording over Lieberman, though it distracts a wee bit from the message that the image conveys.

27. NYT's Article says he Probably would have voted for War and was Repug/Link
Edited on Tue Sep-23-03 09:33 PM by KoKo01
Moving to fill in the blanks of his candidacy a day after he announced for president, General Clark also said that he had been a
Republican who had turned Democratic after listening to the early campaign appeals of a fellow Arkansan, Bill Clinton.

Indeed, after caustically comparing the actions of the Bush administration to what he described as the abuses of Richard M. Nixon,
he said that he voted for Mr. Nixon in 1972. He also said he had voted for Ronald Reagan in 1980 and 1984

12. Cool thing about the internet
With the internet anybody can say anything about anybody else and do so with relative anonymity (except when Attorney-General you-know-who is watching). Thus it's a perfect medium for trashing people by rumor.

Whoever is saying Clark is a Republican is an uninformed... well, there's no nice way to say it... nincompoop. Clark's a Democrat. He scares people because he's a thoughtful, competent patriot with a wonkish sort of avuncular sex appeal. He may or may not be the nominee, but for the moment I'm enjoying watching the the spectacle of the GOP attack machine kick into gear on this guy. He scares the bejeebus out of Karl Rove and I have no illusions about where the "he's really a Republican" smears are being dispatched from.

Bring 'em on.

you're answering the wrong question. this thread is supposed to be about whether Clark WAS a repub. no one that i know of claimed he still is a repub. but it is a fact Clark WAS a repub. he admitted it. the links have been posted many times already.

19. Clark
Seems to me that he's very unproven. Admittedly, his credentials are impeccable, but is he a real dem? And is he capable of captivating the masses. Clinton had an amazing gift of making people feel important. Does Clark? At the same time, is anyone more electable? I wish that we had an option without so many "what ifs." Thoughts?

25. I have not...
heard him speak. But my understanding is that he's difficult to deal with. Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't Clinton dismiss him as a attention hound? I just wish he had been elected as student council president. My real fear is that W will run with the "I'm a regular guy" thing and Clark will come off as an elitist. I've read some things, notable Joe Klein's article, that portrays him as wanting. That said, I cherish the moment that W debates him.

Bottom line, I hope you're right.

28. Fair Enough.
I defer to you on the assessment of the "Rove/Rummy/Ashcroft/Cheney" machinations, but I long for a seasoned politico. That said, it's important to remember how many ducats W has and what a moneyed candidate can shove down the throats of swing voters.

It really is. I apologize for posting multiple entries, but I'm slowing learning the system. And for what it's worth, having read Hate Mail, I'm deathly afraid of criticism that might be viewed as ban-worthy. This forum is amazing, I hope that many of those who opine are young people, and democrats for life.

32. Where some of these LIES originated
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=104&topic_id=393418

Check this thread, which links to MWO- it exposes one of the numerous Rovian attempts to smear Clark in the eyes of the DEM base...

and BTW- Clark is not even my first choice- I'm just sick of the DEM bashing and the gullible DUers who repeat media lies...

34. "Dem Bashing"? "Gullible"?
- Democracy is messy and takes a lot of work and debate. That you don't like what people have to say about ANY candidate is besides the point. Democracy demands an informed electorate.

- Calling DUers 'gullible' unmasks your intent to stifle debate.
