White House defends Rove's comments
http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/news/archive/2005/06/23/national/a090505D35.DTL

The White House defended Rove's remarks and accused Democrats of engaging in partisan attacks. Rove, said spokesman Scott McClellan, "was talking about the different philosophies and our different approaches when it comes to winning the war on terrorism."

34. No, Durbin was the bait.
Durbin was the bait ... and the squeamish Democrats took the bait. Durbin apologized for the truth and handed Rove a stick with which to beat the rest of the national Democrats.

Why is everyone surprised or "outraged" that Rove spins the Durbin statement of truth and apology into something completely different?

I'm only surprised that the Democrats in Washington, D.C. (except the Congressional Black Caucus), keep falling for Rove's tricks time after time.

Now, you can be absolutely assured that Rove WILL NOT apologize for what he said ... Indeed, he will step-up his attacks. THAT is what Durbin should have done!

Until Democrats stick to their principles and show they can take a punch and are willing to defend themselves ... well, until that day comes they're just going to be defined by Bush and Rove as so bad that eventually they won't even vote for themselves.

37. Agreed, it was a calculated statement Rove made for a reason
"Don't forget that these statements are meant to outrage you. You're a targeted audience They're meant to perpetuate a state of maximal polarization in this country -- the state of affairs most suited for vampires like Mr. Rove to suck the nation dry. "

-- Josh Marshall http://www.talkingpointsmemo.com/

This is a means to capture debate and distraction to the populace. The flag debate,
the support our war debate, patriotism, etc. Typical Machiavellian and Gobbles tactics to maintain control by polarization.

That's why they are stirring things up. They are hurting bad. They have very little support for their massive fuckups around the world. But, if they can create chaos, the opportunity to steal more and create more misery is much greater.

I can not believe that the statements are not to stop the momentum that the Downing Street Memo is getting. Rove knows any talk of them will make the numbers plummet for Bush and that W. can not stand any close inspection concerning his war.

110. Rove and reality
I'm an ex-pat down here in New Zealand. I still vote and am concerned about my country. I try to follow what's going on and get a feeling for the mood of America but I have to say things look very weird from down here in Kiwi land. Is it a falso impression or are Americans finally going to do something about the moral lepers who are running the country? Your real impressions of the mood in America would be great to hear. People down here just shake their heads in wonder, as do I.

117. We are wacked
It has got to be weird and very worrysome to the rest of the world have a country who sits on enough "nucular" weapons to destroy the world a bunch of times to be sounding and behaving as aggressively and stupidly as we are. North Korea is a deeply troubled country, but they don't sit on enough nukes to wipe out civilization. It's scary/weird from where I sit to here in NJ. We have utter disdain for the rest of the world, we are now liars and torturers. The goodwill built up from decades of post WWII collaboration is gone, I fear. How's New Zeland? What is their politics like?

119. being in New Zealand
Being down here is like getting a breath of fresh air. I'm really fortunate since I have both citizenships, being born here with an American dad. The people here are actually rational and intelligent. We have semi-socialised medicine, a reasonable social structure for support of families, living wages, almost zero unemployment, provide support to full time college students, lower taxes than the US, run a surplus in our budget, don't screw with the rest of the world, are innovatice and positive, and enjoy ourselves. I gave up a pretty good engineering position in the states to go to wine making school at university here (I'm pretty old) and frankly have felt such a lightening of pressure since I left that it's amazing. Petrol cost a fortune here, it just went up to $1.31 NZ/liter - about USD 3.60/gallon. Politics here is considerably more civil but the TV news reporters aren't afraid to ask tough questions. It is quite entertaining watching them actually demand answers during interviews. We have our problems too, but ...

Having the internet lets me sort of keep up with things, thanks to sites like this one. I've just been getting weird vibes this last week or so and wondered if it was my imagination or maybe something is happening in the Northern hemisphere. Hope so.

It looks like a beautiful counrty. It was, and still is my escape plan if Bush declares himself emperor over here. Know if Weta Digital is hiring right now? I know their "big monkey" picture is due out this xmas, and Narnia must have them swamped. I'd have sent them a demo reel ages ago if it didn't cost like $80 bucks to send a video tape and plastic binder, I checked.

124. It's far more serious than that.
As I've tried to portray in this thread, Rove (and now the White House) has proved that any kind of trust, quid pro quo, or cooperation from the left (or middle) will be betrayed. They've shown that they have no hesitancy whatsoever to violate any kind of agreements, understandings, laws, or oaths.

With Rove's comments and the White House's defense, they've demonstrated beyond a reasonable doubt that they have no honor, no morals, and no ethics, and are completely unworthy of any kind of trust, public or personal.

GENEVA (AP) - U.N. human rights investigators said Thursday
they had reliable accounts of detainees being tortured at the
U.S. base in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, but the United States had
not responded to repeated requests to check conditions there.

18. Rove called Sen Durbin a traitor. There is no other interpretation.
This is from a Rove speech reported in the NYT today. "Has there ever been a more revealing moment this year?" Mr. Rove asked. "Let me just put this in fairly simple terms: Al Jazeera now broadcasts the words of Senator Durbin to the Mideast, certainly putting our troops in greater danger. No more needs to be said about the motives of liberals."The MOTIVES of the Liberals like Sen Durbin? What MOTIVES does Rove have in mind? That is as close to calling a US Senator a traitor as it gets. He should be forced to answer.

76. Daley is partly to blame for this situation
Durbin made his apology just hours after Daley lambasted him for his comments in front of the press. According to this morning's Chicago Tribune, Daley's vicious attack on his speech was the mitigating factor in Durbin's decision to apologize.

Daley has a lot to answer for, both for his remarks and for his recent actions as "da mayor". His approval rating is at it's lowest in history. I'm actually wondering if he'll manage to get re-elected in the next election.

21. Learn a lesson from this!
Rove attacked Democrats for statements they DIDN'T EVEN MAKE.

So even if the middle-of-the-road types in the party get Howard Dean and the rest to pipe down and stop making what they consider 'controversal' statements, it won't matter. Rove and the Republicans will STILL attack the Democratic party for stuff they DIDN'T say.

So we might as well speak our piece.

Lesson over.

29. Use the comments against them--go on the offensive!
Rove's comments, although undoubtedly intended as a diversion, actually gives us a great opportunity to call attention to the reality of the situation:

Democrats and republicans were completely united in going after Al Queda, the 9/11 attackers. But they Bush turned away from Al Queda and focused on an illegal, unjustified war in Iraq, based completely on lies. Now over 1700 Americans have died in that unjustified war, and in the meantime, Al Queda is bigger than ever and Bin Laden remains free.

32. And this is how Democrats should respond to this kind of shit
Instead of, just like recent examples, trying to position themselves by joining in the denunciations and caving into the demands for apologies.

Now, as for this incident, the Democrats should continue to make this an issue.

39. Rove stepped over the line with this one
and there's nothing McClellan can do about it, no matter how much he spins. Rove's ego and arrogance finally got the best of him. The guy walked into Manhattan and basically accused everyone who doesn't enthusiastically support Bush's politics, including most of New York and many of the families directly affected by 9/11, of being cowards, traitors or worse -- all in a desperate, transparent attempt to divide people for political gain. The fact that he has made a career out of New York/New England-bashing politics just makes his comments even more egregious. This will have serious repercussions for him if we hold his feet to the fire.

...just ask: "in the 3 and a half years since 9/11, has this administration's approach to winning the war on terrorism been a success? If so, how are you measuring that? If not, is it possible that your approach has been flawed in some way, and what changes do you plan to make?"

Rove promoting the republican approach to counter-terrorism makes me want to :puke: . How can anyone, with a straight face, say that the "War on Terror" has so far been anything but a miserable failure and a disaster on a global scale?

How can Rove favorably compare the Republican bull in a china shop approach to this problem to anything else?

When Democrats say something off color, they have to apologize till kingdom come.

Then Republicans call half the country "traitors" and when confronted they say "Yes, we said that. So what?"

Democrats need to learn how these mofos play the game.

56. This really stood out to me
"Three days after the terrorist attacks, the Senate voted 98-0 and the House voted 420-1 for a resolution authorizing Bush to use "all necessary and appropriate force" against those responsible for the terrorism"

So how was he allowed to use this resolution to go to war against iraq? They lied about a link, everyone with a teaspoon morsel of a brain knew he was lying then, and continues to lie, so why aren't they being held accountable??

Who gives a flying F about Rove and his stupid comments? Its all a smoke screen, its all a sick game. Its all IRRELEVANT!!

People are DYING every single day! When are our Democratic representatives going to stand up and say, shove all this bull$hit up your rears and let's get to business getting our troops home and stop the killing of innocent people everyday.

At this point I dont even want to move to another country. When I can book a flight off this god forsaken planet? Its been overrun by evil parasites.

Right Now, we need a Spokesperson to call a press conference and tell the Press something like,

"Scott McClellan says Rove "...was talking about the different philosophies and our different approaches...," That's a Lie, Rove ATTACKED Democrats as weak and wrong in their thinking and approach to the 9/11 attacks.

If their was any Partisan attack, it came from Karl Rove, not from the Democrats, who are simply defending ourselves and the Democratic Party."

86. Exactly!
Karl Rove LIED!! And forget about apologies, we need to demand he resign and then he needs to be prosecuted.

We don't need people in our government that outright lie, and this is just the latest of his lies.

No wonder they are in charge, we are supposed to sit back and watch Durbin apologize for telling the truth, and ignore it when they outright lie about Democrats?

Where's the organized machine, blasting the media, the WH, every Republican in Congress that was operating against Durbin last week, on our side? Answer, there is none!! We just roll over and they keep doing it.

The only reason that slimeball has the audicity to make a lying statement like that is because he knows we'll 'take the high road'.

So we are not supposed to ask him to resign or to apologize!! Fine, then get ready for more of the same! Both my Senators and Harry Reid have already demanded that he apologize ~ he made his statement blocks from 9/11. Both NY Senators were outraged, and I know, heard from their constituents ~ I'm glad they did, I hope all Democrats will be equally outraged, but I won't hold my breath.

We have what's known as a plan. Unfortunately, with Republicans in charge, all we get are kneejerk brute reactions from the White House, which, incidentally, had they paid attention as a Democrat in the White House would have done -- specifically Gore -- we wouldn't even be having this ridiculous exchange of barbs.

Every time bush's poll numbers go down, they do something to stir up shit and agitate people so we don't pay attention to things which actually have priority. If the Downing Street Minutes is old news, then by God so is 9/11.

I've had it with their cannibalism.

Karl Rove is the biggest piece of lying scum in existence. He has a long history of lies, deceits and dirty tricks. Without Karl Rove, there would be no George Bush-he is total corruption. He may look like a harmless puggy faced weasel, but he is very dangerous. All of George Bush's campaign attacks against John Kerry, including the Swift Boat attacks were orchestrated by Rove. If he resigns, there will literally be no George Weasel Bush. He took a party boy druggie loser and made him presidential. Because he is such a gutless looking piece of filth, the Bush crime family usually keeps him hidden. I am surprised he came out of his hole to do an interview. He has done very few.

Edited on Thu Jun-23-05 08:31 PM by mcg
And their excuse?
From
http://www.cnn.com/2005/US/06/20/goss.bin.laden/

"We are making very good progress on it. But when you go to the very difficult question of dealing with sanctuaries in sovereign states, you're dealing with a problem of our sense of international obligation, fair play.

"We have to find a way to work in a conventional world in unconventional ways that are acceptable to the international community."
-- CIA Director Porter Goss

Asked whether that meant he knew where bin Laden is, Goss responded: "I have an excellent idea where he is. What's the next question?"

Goss did not say where he thinks bin Laden is, nor did he name the country or countries he was referring to when he spoke of sanctuaries.

================

But "sanctuaries in sovereign states" and a "sense of international obligation, fair play" did not get in their way at all when they started the war of aggression against Iraq, which was based on a pack of lies.

I don't understand why there isn't more outrage about this, and I would have thought that conservatives would be just as outraged as liberals. What is going on here?

And what's this "acceptable to the international community" about? Doesn't this completely contradict Bush's tough talk? BushCo got on Kerry's case for saying:

"No president, though all of American history, has ever ceded, and nor would I, the right to preempt in any way necessary to protect the United States of America.
But if and when you do it, Jim, you have to do it in a way that passes the test, that passes the global test where your countrymen, your people understand fully why you're doing what you're doing and you can prove to the world that you did it for legitimate reasons."

They shamelessly twisted Kerry's meaning, and now they talk about "acceptable to the international community", they are using as an laim excuse what they claimed Kerry meant. Oh no, they say, we cannot (will not) get Bin Laden - one of the main culprits responsible for the death of over 3,000 Americans - that wouldn't be "acceptable" (to whom?), but they say getting Saddam (and Iraq's oil) was, even though it was based on lies. I don't see that the international community finds the war acceptable.

Bush is not sincere about stopping terrorism. He is unwilling to capture Bin Laden and has caused the creation of a breeding ground for terrorism in Iraq. He doesn't care, what he cares about is oil, money, power, and revenge (against the guy who supposedly tried to kill his daddy, he doesn't care about 3,000 dead Americans in New York City).

111. Reid on Rove!
Reid Calls on Bush to Repudiate Rove's Remarks

Thursday, June 23, 2005

Democratic Leader Harry Reid released the following statement:

“I am deeply disturbed and disappointed that the Bush White House would continue to use the national tragedy of September 11th to try and divide the country. The lesson our country learned on that terrible morning is that we are strongest when we unite together, that America’s power is in its common spirit of democracy and freedom.

“Karl Rove should immediately and fully apologize for his remarks or he should resign. The lesson of September 11th is not different for conservatives, liberals or moderates. It is equally shared and was repeatedly demonstrated in the weeks and months following this tragedy as Americans of all backgrounds and their elected representatives rallied behind the victims and their families, united in our common determination to bring to justice those responsible for these terrible attacks.

“It is time to stop using September 11th as a political wedge issue. Dividing our country for political gain is an insult to all Americans and to the common memory we all carry with us from that day. When it comes to standing up to terrorists, there are no Republicans or Democrats, only Americans. The Administration should be focused on uniting Americans behind our troops and providing them a strategy for success in the war on terror and the conflict in Iraq. I hope the president will join me in repudiating these remarks and urge Mr. Rove to take appropriate action to right this terrible wrong.”

118. Huh? Rove says liberals want to cozy up to terrorists, and the WH
says He's just debating the philosophies? If I were to say that Bush and the Republicans are fascists, because I felt many of their policies have encroached on our liberties, I'd be rebuked all over the place (and rightly so). How is it that Rove walks away from this looking like a saint? Scarborough tonight not only defended Rove, but tried to cast him as a victim of Democratic smears. :wtf:

120. This seems to be a major change in Bush strategy
So far Bush has been playing the 'straight' guy
and letting his surrogates do the flaming. But Rove doesn't really count as a surrogate, because he's junior's right hand man (read: his brain). Pelosi's correct -they're getting desperate -and sloppy.
This could really hurt them.

121. Yeah, right, and I'm Superman.
Yeah, right, whatever. How dumb does the WH think that we are? Well, they should know by know the left side doesn't buy into their bs reasons of apparent insanity, but for some reason their fanatic base, will. And boy, what a base it is. It was big enough to vote the GWB back into the WH again.

And, GWB had full support after 9/11 to go after the people that did/caused the 9/11 tragedy, and me like many others were duped into thinking that this man, would do so. But in the end, like life, things don't work out, and horrible things happen. BUt this is just a sad sad look at the way in which the WH plays/spins things. Once again, they are trying to spin bullshit, into diamonds. I for one, can't wait for these "clowns" to leave Washington. Later, Don.

123. The Pot Calling the Kettle Black
"...and accused Democrats of engaging in partisan attacks."

This is a typical Republican tactic. That is, to accuse Democrats of doing something when it is really they themselves who are guilty of it. Their 'class warfare' slogan is a perfect example.
