70% of "Americans" believe it's ok to indefinitely detain people with no charges, no access to lawyers, no trials; and gee, that's exactly what the oh-so-moral "Americans" used as part of their excuse to cheerlead the attack of a sovereign nation.
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=102x1572496Response from those 70% "Americans" from Pat, a TRUE AMERICAN;"Seven-out-of-10 Americans, in other words, think it is all right to hold a person indefinitely without access to legal assistance, contact with family or the outside world, or any opportunity to fight the charges. Seven-out-of-10 Americans.
And they'll keep on feeling like this until the American Gestapo shows up on their doorsteps one day and trundles them away for whatever trumped up reason ... maybe because they were just in the wrong place at the wrong time. Only by then it will be too late to reconsider their poll responses.
Why can't Americans get it through their thick heads that democracy means having respect for all humanity and respect for the rule of law?Why can't they understand that if they condone what we do at Gitmo to others, they might as well condone doing it to their fellow Americans right here at home?
And why CAN'T they bring themselves to allow these prisoners of ours full access to the legal system?
What are they afraid of? That 90% of these prisoners are going to come off as completely innocent? In my opinion, that's what's at the nub of things here.
How rotten has a society gotten when it doesn't want to extend legal recourse to people because it fears they might be innocent after all? The whole rotten house of cards collapses on that argument ..."-Pat
REMEBER, YOU WERE OK WITH IT when it's YOUR TURN, 7-in-10 "Americans".
