Nightline was terrific last night with the report on Tom Delay's buddy, Jack Abramoff.
God and the Academy
June 22, 2005
Tonight we will be switching gears to report on a story that has been brewing for some time at the U.S. Air Force Academy.
It seems almost counterintuitive: a Christian chaplain complaining about religious intolerance by other Christians. But that's the story at the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs. Captain MeLinda Morton, a Lutheran chaplain at the Academy, complained that many chaplains and other officials at the school were insensitive to the religious diversity of the cadets, and further, used their position to promote Evangelical Christianity.
The claims caused quite a stir and a string of complaints by a number of cadets and graduates of the Academy about religious intolerance and overzealous demonstration of Christian faith. Chaplain Morton claims she was moved out of her position as retribution for her complaints. Yesterday, she resigned from the Air Force. Today, the Air Force released its own report on the subject and concedes that there may have been some overly aggressive expressions of Christianity. Tonight, Ted Koppel will talk to the chaplain about the accusations, the report and the impact on the Academy of these allegations.
It is a particularly provocative and challenging issue in these times. We hope you'll join us.
By the way - our plan is to bring your our previously scheduled broadcast on Chester High School tomorrow night.
