12. You have it reversed....54 senators voted to end the debate.....
...they needed 60 votes. FWIW, one Republican did vote NOT to end the debate...Voinovich.

8. I'm ecstatic!
I didn't think it would happen, as I was watching a part of it.

HOWEVER, Bush is just going to appoint him anyway, during recess. And Congress won't have a thing to say about it. I do think, tho, that even a lot of REpugs won't like that.
