Halliburton to expand Gitmo - Anyone seen a peep on the news or in papers?

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
June 17, 2005, 2:45 PM EDT

WASHINGTON -- A subsidiary of Houston-based Halliburton has been awarded a $30 million contract to build an improved 220-bed prison for terrorism suspects at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, the Pentagon announced.

Kellogg Brown and Root Services Inc. of Arlington, Va., is to build a two-story prison that includes day rooms, exercise areas, medical bays, air conditioning and a security control room, according to the Pentagon. It is to be completed by July 2006.

1. I saw two paragraphs, bottom of page in the gutter, deep interior of NYT
Sunday edition. Literally, two paragraphs. It was at the very bottom of an ad-filled page, tucked right next to the center fold. Impossible to miss! Er, find.

2. I had heard something about it on ABC World News Tonight
I think it was last week or over the weekend. Doesn't seem like there's a lot of opposition to it. More room, more torture, more death.

arguments over Gitmo - close it or not?

and now this?

3. $30 million? More like $500 million.
<snip>The total contract could be worth up to $500 million through 2010, the Pentagon said. The Naval Facilities Engineering Command, Atlantic, in Norfolk, Va., is the contracting agency.

6. So who are they building this one for? Iran? Venezuela? Cuba?
You can bet there's a plan to fill it already.

8. Does NPR's Morning Edition count?
More 'heard' than 'seen', really.

9. Not enough. Last week's headlines were "close it or not?" and now...
not a word.
