Frist & McCain press conference Tues am re: BOLTON
10:30 am Tuesday, Frist & McCain have scheduled a press conference with an announcement re: the Bolton nomination.

No leaks yet as to what it's about

Mindless speculation -
1. they have the votes for cloture (possible, but do they need a press conference to announce it?)
2. the WH has agreed to release some of the info and is letting McCain take credit for the deal (possible, McCain has been working on something)
3. they're giving up on Bolton (is this possible???)
4. or ????? (your ideas...)

10. No. Fucking. Way. Judging by McCain's ability to pander to
both sides of the aisle, the wacko fundies, freepers, and Christian Taliban I'm guessing he is going to back Frist to get Chimpy's buddy in New York no matter what. McCain may step out of bounds for a few brief minutes to try and bolster his image as a moderate but when the day is done - he is a black-hearted, partisan rethug who cares more about his ambitions then the American people or the UN. McCain tries to be "reasonable" for a day or two a month but he has already spent June's allotment.

If Frist thought he was losing Bolton it would be announced on a Friday night from the sub-basement of the White House by a lackey that only speaks Portuguese. Frist is front and center - he's got something going to get Bolton confirmed. Country be damned.

McCain is doing duty as Frist and Chimpy's butt boy tomorrow. Mark my words.

15. McCain's retribution for being in the gang of 14?
Then WHAT THE FUCK did the Democrats get out of that damn "compromise" they made to save the filibuster?????? BOLTON SHOULD HAVE BEEN PART OF THAT DEAL!:grr: Then what the hell is Frist going to announce? If he's got the votes, why call a freakin' press conference? That's not news. If the documents are released, I can't IMAGINE that Bolton would make it past a filibuster. What? What the hell is up then? What's news?

8. Isn't there a special rule
That the president can override or bypass the senate. Another "screw you, we don't really need you" Bush moment.

19. The only way a president can over-ride Congress is with a veto
and even then congress can over-ride a presidential veto with a 2/3 vote. And that really only applies to legislation that the president has to sign.

The president can't force the senate to confirm Bolton. He CAN do a recess appointment at some point while the senate is in recess (the next opportunity for that would be the 4th of July recess). Even then, a recess appointment is temporary.

9. Maybe they are going to announce
a recess appt and blame it on dems being obstructionists. Although I don't know why they would announce this rather than the WH.

18. Bush can't do a recess appointment right now
not while the senate is in session. If he's going to do one, (note that he DIDN'T do it over the Memorial Day recess), his first opportunity is over the 4th of July recess.

I'd count out an announcement of a recess appointment tomorrow. Tomorrow is about senate news, of some sort or another.

27. I haven't heard McCain speak about Bolton recently
I have heard that he has concerns about Bolton and that he's been working on trying to get the info from the WH that Biden & Dodd have requested, but I don't specifically know where McCain stands on Bolton.

Maybe that if the Senate doesn't confirm, Bolton will be confirmed anyway by recess appointment, so they can't win. How long is the recess appointment good for?
