The "Current Threat Level" is ELEVATED--(Yellow) according to CNN
they just said that on their little trailer blurb at the bottom of the screen, and i wondered, hasn't it been yellow for a long time?

so i checked the official white house website and now they too have right at the top of the page, 'current threat level' elevated.

i don't think that little bit was on the white house website before very recently, unless i be trippin' again.

is something up?

Do you think it will ever be blue or green?

maybe after we win the war on terror and there's no more terrorism.

How could it be? Even in the 1950s they had a mad bomber going around NYC blowing up things.

They just want to remind us that the boogeyman is still out there, haunting bush's poll numbers.

edit: it's been yellow unless when required to be raised for propaganda

29. It's never been below yellow since it made it to yellow the first time.
I guess Yellow translates to showing your boarding pass *THREE* times in a 20-foot span at the airport (like my boarding pass will magically change my name to that of a known-terrorist?).

I thought they got rid of the colours?
...because they're so freaking stupid.

As far as I remember, it was always yellow. The only reason they're saying so now is because **'s numbers are tanking and they need to remind people that THEY'RE ALL GONNA DIE OH NOES.

8. I've never understood that.
For some reason all the news channels (FOX, CNN, MSNBC) add that to the bottom. I always thought it was just to take up space. nothing is up that I know of...

...although things have a way of being quiet in America.

How damn predictable. I hate it when things become this lame and predictable. It's not a good sign. Means they know that they better be pulling a rabbit out of the hat.

16. CNN started reporting the terror level because
they were losing millions of viewers to Fox. There is a huge segmnent of the population that is keenly interested in the terror level. After watching the weather channel in the morning, checking the terror level is next. It affects how they dress, which way they drive to work, etc. So by telling us what the terror level is they hope to win back some of that audience.

Reminds of a story. Once, last year, I didn't check the terror level and wore a blue oxford shirt with a red polka dot tie. As it turned out the terror level was ORANGE!!!! Imagine how embarrased I was. Anyhoo, I won't be making that mistake again.

30. that isn't the reason we check the terror alert level
Maybe some people just check it just to check it, but if the terror alert level is Orange, and you are a traveller, it can impact how long you need to plan for at airports, especially international airports returning you to the United States. It has even impacted how carefully a rental car is looked at when entering the parking lot of some casinos -- during orange, I've actually had some dude take a mirror to see if a bomb was strapped under my car. During yellow there isn't even a dude watching who enters that parking lot. In a mobile society, these stupid alerts do impact people, because they require places where people gather spend extra time and money on extra security. It also impacts funding and budgets for state and local governments, which in turn can affect investments in such things as municipal bonds or even a stock that might otherwise get a gov't subsidy if the gov't wasn't broke spending all its money on security! These silly color charts cost all of us real money.

17. Not much mention of any colors other than Red & Blue since the election
... as in Red States, Blue States. They no longer need to terrorize us now that they control the WH & Congress. So... on to criticizing Dean for speaking truth to power.

And where do the Reds & Blues fit on the color code system?

23. 5 levels breakdown.
Well, they can't ever use the red level, because they have to save that until after we've been attacked.
And they can't use the bottom level, because that would mean we're safe - and would'nt they feel dumb if they set it at the bottom, and then something happened?

That leaves 3 middle levels.

The bottom middle level is blue, and i don't think it's ever been blue.. to safe I suppose.

That just leaves yellow and orange. So it stays at yellow unless Bush's poll numbers get low or too many administration scandals start coming out. Then they flip it to orange.

26. they regularly scroll the terror level and it has been yellow awhile
It just hasn't caught your eye before for some reason, mopaul. Nothing unusual about this. I guess when you mostly see CNN in airports then you take more notice of the scroll about the terror alert level. They no longer raise it to orange because the extra precautions required were breaking too many states and municipalities financially. So it stays yellow.

28. We are in a state of perpetual suspended terrorism fear
They just want to keep us reminded so we don't get too comfortable, and it covers their ass when the next LIHOP/MIHOP occurs.
It reminds me of the Human Resource directors who intentionally make the 4th leg of a chair too short so that it wobbles during interviews.
It keeps the applicant off balance trying to not let them see the chair wobble--and forces less mental effort on enhancing their qualifications during the interview and more on not falling down.
