Democratic hopeful John Kerry accomplished two goals in Austin this weekend. As a guest speaker at the annual conference of the National Council of La Raza in Austin, he blasted the President's record on the issues of health care, education and immigration, while making a powerful pitch for the sought-after Hispanic vote. Kerry says he wants to improve schools, access to health care and create more jobs for Hispanics. Kerry said during his speech that there's one American who deserves to be laid off, and that it's George W. Bush. Kerry is one of the early front-runners for the 2004 Democratic Presidential nomination. Presidential candidate Howard Dean is scheduled to address the group tomorrow. La Raza, a Hispanic advocacy group, says the number of registered Latino voters increased 20% from 1996 to 2000. The council says Hispanic voters are expected to increase by two million in 2004. The four-day conference is expected to draw about 20,000 to Austin.
