1. "Get big, or get out." - Earl Butz
Another Republican policy deliberately followed for years to crush the foundation of the nation: family farms.

the new foundation: corporate controlled, genetically engineered, chemically soaked mutant cloned crap. Eat up!

3. Great video!
Sending it off to old freinds back home. The small town where I grew up in NE Colorado now has been surrounded by a huge corporate pig farm. Used to be, I could go home and breath lovely fresh air. Last time I visited, the stench from "12 million tons of manure" was all I was smelling.

Several people I know have had to take jobs at the farm, as there really aren't any other jobs avail. I hear the breeding barn is the worst job, worse even than the slaughter house.

I used to know almost everyone in town. Now, we have lots of transplants for these low paying jobs, and the crime rate has risen 10 fold in the last 10 years.

4. A TURKEY'S OWN STORY

AND HOW ARE YOU KILLED ? Apparently we go through a water bath charged with electricity. It's meant to knock you out for a bit, while they slit your throat, but sometimes it doesn't work, and you feel the knife. But I'm getting ahead of myself. First, of course, they hang you up in shackles-that's metal things they slot your feet into. You can imagine the fear, and then the pain. It can be excruciating, but there's nothing you can do t o help yourself. Then it's the waterbath bit. Theoretically, you're unconscious from the waterbath to the end, but I'm sorry to say that every year an awful lot of us get right to the scalding tank stage alive. I just hope not too many of us are conscious, because that' s a horrific thought. Just horrific.

5. Howard F. Lyman, LL.D Mad Cowboy
"The total number of mammals and birds raised and killed for food in the U.S. this year is expected to reach 9.906 billion. This represents a 2% increase over the 2000 figure of 9.713 billion." (extrapolation of data published by USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) by FARM: http://www.farm.org For report pdf: http://www.wfad.org/RESOURCES/NRAnVictims2x.pdf) <02.10.01.01>

"The 2001 total includes 40 million cattle and calves (down 4% from 2000), 113 million pigs (down 2%), 4 million sheep (down 7%), 308 million turkeys (up 1.3%), 8,967 million 'broilers' (up 2%), 446 million laying hens (up 3.8%), and 25.6 million ducks (up 2.8%)." (extrapolation of data published by USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) by FARM: http://www.farm.org For report pdf: http://www.wfad.org/RESOURCES/NRAnVictims2x.pdf) <02.10.01.02>

"The total also includes nearly 860 million animals who die from mistreatment before ever reaching the slaughterhouse. It does not include the staggering number of aquatic animals used for food, nor the smaller number of terrestrial animals hunted for food or because they compete with farmed animals." (extrapolation of data published by USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) by FARM: http://www.farm.org For report pdf: http://www.wfad.org/RESOURCES/NRAnVictims2x.pdf) <02.10.01.03>

"The 9.900 million animals raised and killed for food account for 98% of all animals abused and killed annually in the US. Approximately 135 million animals are killed for 'sport', 25 million are used in biomedical research and testing, and 10 million are put down in pounds." (extrapolation of data published by USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) by FARM: http://www.farm.org For report pdf: http://www.wfad.org/RESOURCES/NRAnVictims2x.pdf) <02.10.01.04>

10. Short step from the Farm to the Company Town...
From treating farms and animals like this to treating most other businesses and people this way.

Robber Barons used to do this in mining and logging towns with people...to some extent we're already doing it with work camps of migrant laborers...the more callous we become the likely it is we'll see this in other aspects of our lives.

One of the reasons I pay more, always eat organic, and support the local family farms at our farmers market every week.
