A friend and I were talking about the state of our country the other
night. We both know how screwed up things are right now, but he said something I found interesting. He mentioned to me that there have been times in our nation's history when things have been as bad as now or even worse; He used McCarthyism and slavery as examples.

My question is has their been a time in our nation's history that has threatened the constitution and the rights of Americans that we are seeing today? Was McCarthyism worse than "Neoconism"?

Just throwing this out to see what people think.

1. This is worse. The other times had more protections. They are
dismantling them today and so the recourse is less to fall back on.

4. Early 1920's.
Economic robber-baronism, red scares, conservative court, high levels of government corruption, bigotry in the form of Jim Crow, the rise of the KKK, as well as anti-immigration, anti-catholic bigotry.

The "McCarthyism" of this age rivaled that of the 1950's.
