"God Hates Fags" protester refuses water in Massachusetts
This crowd is up here protesting churches they think are friendly to gays ("sodomite whorehouses"), and high school graduations whose districts are considered gay-friendly. ("Fag infested cesspools".) One of the protest sites this evening is Dracut High School, where some kid wrote an essay supporting Ellen DeGeneres.

As you can imagine, in "liberal, evil" Massachusetts they are barking up the wrong tree. One of the Westboro Baptist Klan (I think her name was Sherry Phelps-Rowen) was sounding off on the 6pm news here and since it is unseasonably hot today one of the church members offered her some cold water ("Should we not spunge her mouth?") ...she made a big show on camera saying "Hon, I don't know what your hand has been doing or where it's been!"

Fine, dry up then you POS.

6. You'd love the locals reaction up here ronny
They interviewed the typical Yankee man-on-the-street on what they thought:

"I can't even imagine being so ridiculous," said one older lady on camera. Most of those interviewed were quite astonished that anyone's thought process would go that way. The "POPE IN HELL!" signs didn't help :)

"Sing, Sing a song" with the gay protestors in Michael Moore's THE AWFUL TRUTH show.

3. Out here in wild west NM
the Phelps clan decided to protest. I guess they didn't expect two guys who (it later turned out) barely knew each other to go into a spontaneous and very long soul kiss right in front of them.

Yeah, the country is full of bigots. However, the quietly bigoted despise the antics of the Phelps clan. It makes them all look as bad as they are.

I hope that tight assed bitch got good and dehydrated. Maybe something like that is what it will take to break through the ice around her heart.

8. All too familiar with the Phelpses
Edited on Sun Jun-05-05 05:30 PM by liberalmind33
I live in Kansas and am all too familiar with the Phelps family. In fact, I know three members of the family quite well, for I've had to interact with them through my work. They are a very bizarre group, much like a cult, but on an individual level, these people are professional, articulate, brilliant, really. When I first saw them protesting an event at the University of Kansas, I could not believe my eyes. I dismissed them as a bunch of redneck inbreds. I later came to know some of them, only to discover that they're very astute professionals, most of them are attorneys, but do so outside of their regular 9-5 jobs. They have a law practice in Topeka, KS. Here's an example of how their operation works. The City of Topeka tried to outlaw funeral protests, in an attempt to shut them up 'cause they're famous for protesting funerals. So, the Phelps family sued the City of Topeka, won, then sued the city for $163,000 in legal fees they incurred as a result of having to sue the city. The court ordered the city to pay, so the Phelps family received that money (tax-payer dollars) and it went straight back into their church coffers, thus funding protests like the one today in Boston. Hard to believe. Their tactics are backward, crass, disgusting, and juvenile, but they're not stupid. And, oddly enough, they vote Democrat. Their father was a pivotal figure in the Brown vs. Board of Education case, on the side of Brown. The family is staunchly pro-civil rights, but not gay civil rights. Bizarro...:wtf:

9. A first post welcome to you
Clearly it all started with some self-loathing somewhere down the line. The front line protestors indeed are cult-like. Makes me sad to see the little kids they bring to the protests holding "Thank God for September 11" signs. Don't be a stranger!

14. Welcome, and I've heard of the litigious nature of the Phelps clan
through friends who live in Topeka. Nobody ever said they were stupid, just vile and tacky.

The first post in this thread also indicates they have no experience with Christian charity.

Uummmmm . . . tell the WHOLE story, please . . . mind you now, being "brilliant" as you say . . . has nothing to do with one's mental health as evinced by Mr. Fred "Christian" Phelps himself!!

See, e.g., Morris Dees' The Southern Poverty Law Center's (SPLC) bio on Fred (and the fruit doesn't fall too far from the tree): http://www.splcenter.org/intel/intelreport/article.jsp?aid=231

In short, Fred Phelps is so tightly wound that he indoctrinates his own children with pervasive, systemic, inflexible vitriol that blinds them, too, as it does Fred, of and from reality. BTW, Fred was disbarred a few years ago. Take some time and read that hyperlink url.

edited to add: Welcome to DU, liberalmind33. However, you gave WAY TOO MUCH credit to dysfunctional Fred Phelps. On the other hand, I do understand that Fred and his family of crazies have caused the State of Kansas much time, energy, and expense regarding litigation in attempts to intimidate the entire community if not the entire State of Kansas. Yes, Fred makes a living out of, as does his kids too, suing people as a disbarred lawyer. My sympathies to you, liberalmind33. The guy is a lunatic as is his entire family of so-called "Westboro Baptist Church of Topeka, Kansas."

Here's a snippet from SPLC's website regarding lunatic Fred and his so-called "church" of his family members:

"Trained as a lawyer, Fred Phelps was disbarred in 1979 by the Kansas Supreme Court, which asserted that he had 'little regard for the ethics of his profession.' The formal complaint against Phelps charged that he misrepresented the truth in a motion for a new trial in a case he had brought, and that he held the defendant in the case up to 'unnecessary public ridicule for which there is no basis in fact.' Following his disbarment from Kansas State courts, Phelps continued to practice law in Federal courts. In 1985, nine Federal court judges filed a disciplinary complaint charging him and six of his family members, all attorneys, with making false accusations against them. The Phelpses fought the complaint but lost. In 1989, Fred Phelps agreed to surrender his license to practice law in Federal court in exchange for the Federal judges allowing the other members of his family to continue practicing in Federal court." http://www.splcenter.org/intel/intelreport/article.jsp?aid=231

Too bad the federal court bargained the kids' ability to practice law in federal court, too, since they are equally as crazy.

21. I would argue
about them being "staunchly pro-civil rights. Most of the cases were settled out of court and they made out big by doing it that way.

Welcome to DU, we are neighbors. I am in Topeka. We have some good DUers in Lawrence. Come visit the Kansas section.

10. Uh......Sherry honey....those words are taken from a documentary
called "The Times of Harvey Milk." You obviously read it when you took the course "Homo 101."
Milk is already in heaven. I doubt you will make it Sherry. You will remain in purgatory until you repent for the massive distress you have caused America's gays and for the disgrace you have brought upon the city of Topeka. Praise Jesus!

one word: "VERY!"

And, unfortunately, it's these kind of messed-up kids that act out later on in life. Therefore, they inevitably get into the juvenile justice system or the adult justice system. Sad. Very sad, for them and for us, the American taxpayers.

at a High School & Churches (because of a gay T-Shirt) and this is a pretty right wing area and they DID NOT get a good reception. Was surprised at how that community came out against him. He didn't stay long.

These people are such jackasses. And they expect to convert people to their way of thinking this way??? They're nothing but hateful jackasses. Someone was trying to be nice to her, even though she's a very hateful person, and instead treated them that way? Bitch.
