It's not for discussion so much as to see if there is widespread outage, as opposed to individual.

I do. These are wildly different,...are they not? Last time I searched "democratic underground" there were literally thousands of pages that were G-E-N-U-I-N-E DU pages rather than right-wing attacks within the first three listed.

You never stated your previous experience.

I am not saying the panic room isn't safe.

I believe it is inadequate for purposes of networking.

so i got your point, i thought.

but here is a point about the Panic room that may be helpful. During the last 'downtime' several of us were checked into the DUpr site, and from there we were able to get the modified link 'upload.du, etc.

we couldn't get to it here, although it was posted here, b/c we ...couldn't get here. Someone did and posted it there. We were able to log back on with the revised link.

it was a big help.

i wish the admins here could create a failsafe mechanism of some sort. They have every email addy of every member, and could contact during some crisis...that is as long as there is an internetsss. But if it goes down, well at that point i guess we'll be in the streets anyway.

i wish i knew the answer, but blogs may be the best avenue, or the old standard BBS, but then again, the reliance is on the internet...sss.

51. Maybe we can start by PMing our favorite DU'ers, say a couple of dozen
Edited on Sat Jun-04-05 08:35 AM by bunny planet
people at a time, inquiring as to whether they'd mind swapping their contact information with us. Then ask each of them to do the same with a couple of dozen other DU'ers etc. OR we could do it by state, visit your state forum and try and get outside DU contact information for as many people who are willing and also concerned. Keep a list and add to it. If and when DU is messed with we might have the beginnings of an outside the internets network in a few months. The state idea seems really workable. It's a start, I know there are 70K of us, but if there is a thread posted asking DUers to do this as back-up, I'm sure they will be interested and we can begin to feel more secure about our abilities to connect should there be any 'disruptions', intentional or otherwise.

As they say, the revolution will not be televised, or online for that matter.

where individuals could contact 1-5 ppl, who would know to contact 1-5 more, etc.

Someone would have to set it up tho, so that even physical distances weren't too great btwn contacts if it came down to having to actually find your contact.

i guess i'm imagining the worse case scenario...but in these times.

It even has political sections up and running. One is a password protected page we use to occasionally strategize away from the prying eyes of freepers. We did a lot of BUY BLUE organizing this way around election time, instead of leaving plans out in the open for the "opposition."

I don't know if it can handle DUs traffic, but it is always there if anyone needs it.

BTW, thanks for keeping us hyped up over the Downing Street Memo. Your posts inspired me to send the information to everyone I knew who might sign Conyers' letter. I asked them to forward the information and at least one person did. If one person on his e-mail list forwards the info, it will get to even more people. I rolled a little snowball down the hill, but I think it will get pretty large by the time it hits the bottom of the slope. :)

If everyone does this, we will create a white-out! :D

46. There is a script that could be used for the homepage
that would require everyone to know a username and passord to find the actual network. It would require us all to login and know the page name though. I'd have to go look at it (when I find all of my cdrom backups) again, but I seem to remember it working on networks that have the "virtual directory listing denied" deal.

Otherwise, we could just link back up somehow through individual emails to each other. Like if you know someone's email address on DU (pals), you could email them and see what they know, then they could email someone else, etc. until we link back up somehow... I wish I still had the business account with 150 megs of space, I'd offer to provide a private space for a little virtual "shelter/bunker" for us to safely hide out in until the jerk who attacked us could be stopped.

Actually, it would be fun to have a group just to share strategies on how we could get around every attack our computer techs on DU may know about, so we could have a solid, locked Plan B in case of an attack.

unthinkable (that w/ the neocon cabal running our country is not so unthinkable), I've often wondered what they would be capable of including shutting down key websites through hacking (like DU) that serve as means of communication.

It wouldn't be inconceivable that they wouldn't attempt to do that and even try to shut down internet access since they can't actually shut down the internet(s) (although I'm sure if there was/is a way, they'd try).

There needs to be multiple ways and locations of leaving messages and communicating, especially if these SOBS MIHOP/LIHOP a 9/11 type attack that puts our country in Level Red alert and even martial law.

I personally even have a list of my favorite DUers emails w/ whom I have built trusting relationships over time and kept notes of names of longtime DUers whose postings I like, trust and know to be true blue american patriots who in a time of crisis I'd reach out to....

With that said, I will also say that with some of the recent "revelations" on the DU by Skinner and others about how easy our info/profiles were available to Admins who could be ANYBODY, I have come to assume no place is safe for privacy or security of identity.

I assume in a "crisis" time like what many of us are thinking, that we need to be knowing and planning for many ways to communicate and share info...problem is, most if not all electronic means (cell phone, phone, email, internet etc) is easily shut down, intercepted etc...What are the alternatives? Paul Revere?

An IRC room would be a good idea. Our mods here could be our mods in there, and we can keep out the Freeps by making the channel invite only and kick/banning anyone who makes trouble.

I've been using IRC for a decade or so, and it's amazing to me how many people don't know the first thing about it.

57. Daily Kos' servers are owned by a commercial firm at an undisclosed
location in New York state, according to Kos, so someone breaking into his home would not be able to damage the database. He made a point of saying that during his TV interview some time back. I hope that there is a mirror site or some other backup for DU, though of course what it might be could not be publicized. (Hi, Agent Mike & miscellaneous trolls and freepers! :hi: )

Skinner is a wise and experienced fellow, and just imagine what he's seen of malicious intrusion by this time. He is not naive. Surely he and the other admins have some way of preserving the essential core of DU so that a hacking attack or physical break-in could not destroy it. I imagine they must have thought about that quite early in DU's evolution, and now that it has become an ever more vital progressive tool and venue, surely they are aware that the stakes have risen.

They won't and shouldn't tell us what they have done, but I'm sure they've done something in preparation for malicious attack. Just think of the elaborate setup to detect and remove disruptive messages and trolls from the discussions and from membership. These are not people who are going to be caught by surprise at the idea that hostile forces would like to destroy the site and the network that has developed around it.

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ihatebushfanclub/

Join us!

(Ok...it's a shameless plug for a group I moderate but it has already a large base and a chat room)

62. Google Groups
It's free and can be used the next time terrorists attack the forum. How those anti-American freepers get away this is unknown. Best to have 2 groups, one at Yahoo and one at Google for backups. They'll send their Christian army at us one day and we'll need a reliable form of communication to organize a retreat and to assist in our own survival againt the Christian death squads.

I am taking note of all those offering their blogs.

It would be awesome if we could set up a system that secures our advocacy.

69. A dial-up BBS
Remember those days?

What to do when the internet is history.

and, yes, there are still some hard core BBS operators out there. Give them your support, you never know when you might need them.

Oh, that's right, you have a cell phone. Sorry, Fearless Leader will shut down that too.
