Refugees International Urges Government of Sudan to Cease Harassment of MS Staff

http://www.refugeesinternational.org/content/article/detail/5942

The Government of Sudan’s detention of Médecins Sans Frontières Holland’s director for Sudan, Paul Foreman, and the group's Darfur coordinator, Vincent Hoedt, a day after the Secretary-General Kofi Annan left the country, is an affront to the Secretary General and yet another example of the Government’s unwillingness to accept international human rights standards. The two aid workers were detained on charges of publishing false reports, undermining society, and spying after the release of their report, “The Crushing Burden of Rape: Sexual Violence in Darfur,” which was published on March 8, 2005. The report documented the plight of the hundreds of women and girls seeking medical care following rape and sexual violence in Darfur, but did not directly implicate the Government of Sudan."

And as a result of the outcry:

"Sudan drops MSF charges after international outcry

Good news. BBC confirms today charges are to be dropped against two aid workers in Darfur accused of falsifying a report on rape, diplomats say. BBC report extracts:

The arrests led to an international outcry, which the BBC's Jonah Fisher in Khartoum says seems to have forced the Sudanese government into a u-turn.

In Khartoum, United Nations special envoy Jan Pronk met both the president and foreign minister. He is said to have received assurances that all charges would be dropped.

'Smear campaign'

The BBC's Martin Plaut, who recently travelled to Darfur, says that many Sudanese believe Western aid workers have given information on alleged human rights abuses in Darfur to the United Nations, which has passed a sealed list of 51 war crimes suspects to the International Criminal Court.

On Tuesday, Mr Pronk condemned the "smear campaign" in Sudanese newspapers against aid workers, accusing them of fabricating reports of rape.

Human Rights Watch Africa director Peter Takirambudde said Mr Foreman's arrest was "a perfect illustration of how far the Sudanese government is prepared to go to silence criticism and deny its own responsibility for massive atrocities in Darfur."

Bush Says More Funding for Africa "Doesn't Fit Our Budget Process" posted by journalist3072 and the discussion at the DU is at:

Bush Says More Funding for Africa "Doesn't Fit Our Budget Process"

snip from Washington Post article:

" Bush rebuffed British Prime Minister Tony Blair's efforts to persuade the world's wealthiest nations to double aid to Africa. Blair, who is scheduled to meet with Bush in Washington next week, wants to raise an additional $50 billion per year to help African nations.

"It doesn't fit our budgetary process," Bush said.

Entire article at: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2005/06/01/AR2005060101725.html?referrer=email

What an a*s Bush is! More funding for Africa doesn't fit his "budget process?" I think instead of process, he should have said priority. Because that's what he meant--more funding for Africa is not his priority (or interest)."
