Is DU evolving or....?
Sometimes I feel like many issues come up that have been explored and discussed many times before but each time, they move a little bit forward. Seldom do we come to a consensus about any issue. However, consciously or unconsciously, I think we form opinions that stick with us by sifting thru all the diverse opinions that are found here. Where are we headed? Are we evolving to a moment of Zen or are we headed to another destination? :)

3. The thing is.. we always have new people joining us
Edited on Thu Jun-02-05 12:25 AM by SoCalDem
and even though we re-plow the same ground over and over, we always get additional "fertilizer" (some REAL and a generous amount of the productive kind)...''New people discover something, and have to share it. We oldtimers may already know it, but the new person has the excitement factor of learning it, so they can often shine a new light on things..

The Bev issue is a case in point.. LONG before Bev ever "joined us", we had been discussing e-voter fraud..

There is no one that we can't learn from if we keep an open mind.

edit to add: There is no such thing as a stupid question, only a stupid answer.

4. Zen, or at least the next rung on the ladder to Enlightenment.
Honest, sincere, and passionate debate will do that. Sometimes. If all parties allow themselves to be open-minded.

I think DU has started something that will have a HUGE impact on the future. Can you imagine a political candidate that grew up on DU?

6. which way is forward?
by forward you mean "closer to my opinion", right? That's certainly my idea of forward.
I hope we get to that moment of Zen, because I need to learn some things about bicycle maintenance.

8. Not necessarily...
One opinion doesn't last long unless you can get some like minded support....But, sometimes it is a small ripple that reaches far... :)

9. Here's what I've seen resolved just since the election.
1) A broad based commitment to voting rights, election reform and disenfranchised voters in Ohio and elsewhere starting with the support for Conyers et al and Boxer.
2) A grudging acceptance that Reid might actually be a pretty good Senate Minority Leader.
3) A quick end to the Red versus Blue nastiness for the most part (and good riddance, lots of Reds were probably Blue)
4) A drop off of focus on 2008 and more on 2006 with some great discussion House, Senate, and State wide candidates.
5) Growing user ship!!!

I'm sure there's more but that's a start, especially the commitment to voting rights. We were robbed, no doubt about it.

14. Learning
We learn from each other. Like I discovered that Christians aren't about killing people like the Bible says to and they aren't anti-science, anti-technology, and some believe that a cure for diseases would be nice and not let people die horrible deaths. I'm around nothing but fundies and my family is declaring that I am destroying the family by not being Christian as they now know (20 past years too, fools) and I attend a UU church instead of a fundie Baptist cult.

15. DU evolves along with real life;
Two months ago, most DUers were posting that we "can't leave Iraq now (regardless what the Iraqis want; us the hell out) because we broke it so we must stay and fix it".

Now most DUers are posting along the lines of "we're the problem, no stabilization until we leave, pay for breakage and let the Iraqis do their own fixing coz they're not stupid little children" etc.

Yep, imo DU evolves as facts and reality emerge and evolve. DU isn't stuck in an old rut, the way rightwingnut minds are.

16. I guess I am strong proponent of Intelligent Design behind DU.....
How could something as beautiful and amazing as DU just have been made by chance? No, it has been DESIGNED, and designed intelligently may I add.

19. I feel the whole Democratic cause is slowly moving forward
For the first time in my lifetime (I'm 24), I feel that the Democratic Party, on nearly every level, is moving forward. I think we are going to surprise a lot of people in 2006.

21. I know I've expanded on opinions I'd previously formed
by reading other folks' insights on this board.

The Economy, Taxes and Budget board is probably the best example of this. My posts on the subject are all done in the spirit of "only a fool feels compelled to point out the obvious," since I'm completely out of my field on that board save for extensive reading. Others who are in that field have educated me beyond my reading.

I would guess it's the same for other people on these message boards. At some point a consensus will be reached, and that will be the beginning of the sort of grass roots movement that has changed this country and its government radically before now.

I'm grateful to people who expand on my ideas, people who give me the occasional strokes, and people who tell me off. I learn something from all of them.

23. It is not nougat, chocolates
First. I doubt you will get a good answer. Your question is really smart. I think we all ask similar questions and they pose as rhetorical questions, but it's really because the community, isn't smart enough to answer.

Everyone's portrayal of the healthy path is probably flawed. You can pose safe metaphors for yourself, by determining what is safe.

Notice your reaction to consuming sugar, and compare it to feeling in Love. What does good mean. What does it mean to you? This is the type of exercises we challenge ourselves with.

Ooh. Where's the nougat? I've grasped it. Now I'm going to sleep.
