8. Real simple why you should care
Since 1996 Prince Abdallah has more or less been the defacto head of state of Saudi Arabia. Now because of the whole deal of it being legal to marry multiple wives and the non-use of birth control through the years there are literally hundreds of princes who have a claim to the throne. Just because Abdallah is running the country doesn't necessarily mean he will become king and officially run the country. Someone could spark a civil war if they are ambitious or it could end up being the hardliners who want to take Saudi Arabia further into the Middle Ages or the liberals who want to liberalize the country. Not saying that it will happen but just some food for thought.

13. Correct to care
Nature abhors a vacuum - especially a power vacuum and in places like Saudi Arabia, it tends to fill it with worse sons of bitches than the one before. The world oil market is doing the funky chicken and the House of Saud(omy) is one of the few power centers with enough clout (for all the wrong reasons) to "stabilize" it - if only temporarily. Those who say "bring it on" could be in for a nasty, nasty ride. Problem is, the rest of us will be on the roller coaster with you. As in the 70s, these folks hold the key and no one rides for free... sorry, I was transported into an episode of "Mod Squad" or something there for a moment.
