Cigarette prices going up, soon it'll be cheaper to smoke marijuana

Richmond overhauled the state's tax code in spring 2004 amid claims of needing to right Virginia's fiscal direction.

In addition to raising the state sales tax and beginning a phase-out of tax age deductions, the state approved a 17.5-cent increase on packs of cigarettes effective Sept. 1, to the delight of anti-tobacco lobbyists.

A second 10-cent hike will take effect July 1, 2005, bringing the total state tax per pack to 30 cents.

Prior to the hike, the state had the lowest tax rate in the nation -- 2.5 cents per pack -- and legislators last increased the tax on cigarettes in 1960.

3. it's more on the left coast....
$40 1/8th. I think they are higher quality flavors here, so maybe worth the extra $? ;) Cigarettes are $4.50 average. Nasty habit, I should probably quit.

4. Whoa! Where do you find $50 ounces?
Haven't seen that since the '70's!

The typical 'house brands' are more like $120-$240/oz, depending on quality, scarcity, bouquet, aftertaste, etc...

The best of the local midwest crop is up near $350/oz, but it's gorgeous -- it almost glows in the dark...

7. I don't grow tobacco
but it's grown everywhere here in TN. It's hard work I'm told, having to tend, top, cut, strip, hang, and cure. It's very regulated as far as how much you can grow. Supposedly it's nasty to work in because of tobacco worms and the sticky nature of the sap.
In contrast, the people I've know who grow weed just let it do it's thing and then harvest it. Tobacco farmers take the whole cut plant and hang them upside down in barns to cure for a few weeks so the sap runs down into the leaves. I wonder what weed would be like if the same techiques were used to cultivate it.
Used to be a serious stoner until my work started random testing. It's not worth losing my job/benefits because the benefits are great here and I've got kids. But, I couldn't resist if someone were to hand me nice phat one!

...to smoke the happy weed here in Australia for years.

We are paying just over $16.00 for ONE pack. While I can't remember what the tax is on that, I do remember that the majority of that price is tax.

For a carton you can near enough to $70.00 per carton.

On edit, I thought I would add that we have a HUGE tax on booze as well. Just for a six pack of beer you can pay $12.00 for the ok stuff, or near on $17.00 for the better beer. And imports like Miller Genuine Draft it is around $25.00 for a six pack, last time I looked.
