Here's the deal: he doesn't care about most of what he speaks about to the press.
But he DOES probably believe in a few things. I think he believes in the comfort of a nice glass or five of whiskey, cartoons in the afternoon, money and naps.
But as for everything else? Yeah, right.
Wouldn't someone who had such strong beliefs be able to expound upon them from time to time? All you see from him is stammering, sweating, and repeating the same thing over and over.
Wouldn't someone with strong beliefs on contemporary issues be more than happy to discuss them with the press, and thus the American people? All you see from him is animosity toward the press, and thus the American people.
Wouldn't someone like that be able to express their beliefs without repeating the same three or four keywords for each issue? Is that all his addled brain can hold?
Wouldn't someone like that be able to see the contradictory nature of their own beliefs? For example, the "culture of life" buzz phrase--but he signed the bill allowing hospitals to take people off of life support in the case of no one paying the bills, but Texas puts more prisoners to death than any other state, but Iraqi lives are still lives, but the abortion rate has RISEN under his administration. Wouldn't someone with such strong beliefs at least NOTICE such inconsistencies and wrestle with them to some degree?
At least attempt to address them? He doesn't even do that.
He doesn't give a shit about stem cells, he's probably only vaguely aware of what he's talking about. He has to be tutored constantly on what to say he believes.
He is a hollow man. T.S. Eliot described bush 80 years ago:
Shape without form, shade without colour, Paralysed force, gesture without motion
