Nine Inch Nails canceled their MTV Movie Awards gig....

because they wanted to perform before a backdrop pic of GWB.

I saw the video for "The Hand That Feeds", it seems to be a dark tale of torture and submission (it's NIN, go figure). I wonder if Rumsfeld would have been a better choice than "Der Fuhrer" as a backdrop, but it's good to know that MTV is against music as political dissent.

Good thing MTV wasn't around in the 60s, Woodstock would have featured "The Archies" as headliners.

<excerpt>
Nine Inch Nails have dropped out of the 2005 MTV Movie Awards following a dispute over their plan to incorporate an image of George W. Bush into their performance of the song "The Hand That Feeds." Stepping in to fill the void are the Foo Fighters.

The announcement was made Thursday via a statement posted by Nails frontman Trent Reznor on NIN.com. (link below)

"Nine Inch Nails will not be performing at the MTV Movie Awards as previously announced. We were set to perform 'The Hand That Feeds' with an unmolested, straightforward image of George W. Bush as the backdrop," Reznor wrote. "Apparently, the image of our president is as offensive to MTV as it is to me. See you on tour this fall when we return to play in America."

<snip>
"While we respect Nine Inch Nails' point of view, we were uncomfortable with their performance being built around a partisan political statement. When we discussed our discomfort with the band, their choice was to unfortunately pull out of the Movie Awards."

1. Not too many bands more anti-* than Foo Fighters
I wonder how they'll work their message in?

DAVE GROHL has revealed the inspiration behind the FOO FIGHTERS’ ambitious new album.

The band release the half-rock, half-acoustic double set ‘In Your Honour’ on June 13. And now Grohl has revealed that, while the album is not exactly political, it was inspired by his time spent on the campaign trail with Democrat presidential challenger John Kerry.

4. Grohl Actually Does Drums On the Latest NIN Album
Edited on Sat May-28-05 12:05 PM by InfoMinister
It's a pretty good album. Not NIN's best, though. He plays drums throughout the entire album.

3. An anti-Bush statement is not "partisan"
I doubt Reznor is a mainstream democrat.

7. I've published my take on my music web site
Complete with three very flattering pictures of Georgie! Come to think of it, a montage of unaltered Bush pics played along to the song would make for a real fun video!

...Nine Inch Nails were scheduled to perform on the MTV Movie Awards show in June. The song they had in mind was The Hand That Feeds, the very anti-authority lead single from their successful fifth album With Teeth. The backdrop they had in mind was a single unaltered photograph of George W. Bush. MTV said in a statement: "While we respect Nine Inch Nails' point of view, we were uncomfortable with their performance being built around a partisan political statement. When we discussed our discomfort with the band, their choice was to unfortunately pull out of the Movie Awards." NIN responded on their web site, "Nine Inch Nails will not be performing...as scheduled. Apparently, the image of our president is as offensive to MTV as it is to me."

Elsewhere on the band's web site, a poster identifying herself as a DJ "on many alternative rock...stations...with several different companies; including the evil empire Clear Channel" expressed "disappointment" in Reznor on the grounds that "public people shouldn't blatantly publicize their thoughts to the masses." She also claims to have been one of the "first program directors in the country to play NIN even when my bosses thought it sucked." Her solution? "I will be one jock...who never again pushes the music of NIN...I will not be putting Trent down on the air as I do not feel I should shove my opinions down listeners' throats...I simply will not give (out) any information...(about) or be a cheerleader for NIN."

So this DJ Reznor feels qualified to punish Reznor by doing unto him exactly what she thinks he shouldn't be doing unto others? That's not patriotic or non-partisan, that's irrational and hypocritical. Sins of omission are still sins--and at least Reznor changed his mind about committing his.
