Did anyone see the panel on Cspan this morning? I thought it was very enlightening.
There is NO real, organized Al Qaeda network, as portrayed by our government and the media. But Bush and Blair have exploited our fears, after 9/11, to do what they want--make war and pursue power over the world.
"Al Qaeda" symbolizes that fear--but it's a myth built by the media, which let itself be used by the goverment, that says there is a powerful force for evil out there organized and threatening us. They stoke that fear regularly. And there is as yet no real counter-argument to this belief. But I think it's coming.
Up until now the media has played along with the stereotypes, telling the story of good vs. evil, partly because of government pressure, but partly because that is what the public has WANTED to hear. We were greatly harmed, so the thing that harmed us must be very powerful, we assume. We are still in a post 9/11 era, and it takes time to see things objectively. It's true that there are anti-American groups, but there always have been. The more we involve ourselves in other countries' affairs, the more of this we will see. But let's not blow this out of proportion.
Just like during the Vietnam era, when at first the media and the people approved, buying the lie, but later came out against it, there will come a time soon, I think, when both the media and the American public will start looking much harder for the truth. And that truth is that we've allowed the government to use us to make war, allowed them to send troops and billions of dollars to go over there to make war for their own ends. They have a powerful propaganda machine, but sooner or later the truth will be out for all to see.
We should not make the mistake of scape-goating the media for the problem, because the real crime, the real lie, is coming from this administration. They are the primary beneficiaries, and they are the ones primarily at fault. The media needs to get a lot more responsible for telling the truth, though. And the people need to stop being so afraid and wanting to blindly punish someone or something for 9/11.
We need to get this truth out--reports of a terrorist threat are "greatly exaggerated"!
