dems: America/Americans suck (and always have), vote for us.
This is what I heard today at dad's 70th birthday when the topic slid to politics and Bush - I brought up, why would someone have voted for bush, the dems are the party of the people and have been (including 5 relatives on both sides of family which are elected dems and we all like/liked (some have passed on)).

My sister & brother are the ones for whom I titled this thread. During the discussion (and several of us were talking at once - dad, brother, sister, wife, niece, bro-in-law, sis-in-law, some aunts and uncles and cousins) she said:

"The democrats are always telling us how bad and evil we americans are, how we are screwing everyone everywhere, like preachers telling people they are sinners and then asking them to vote them in and they can help us with our sins. Why would I vote for someone who says we suck?"

My reply was aimed more in a religious context (she is baptist): "Sinners were called to repentance, and maybe we need that as a country. We aren't the only people needing it, there's other places the same, but we can focus on what we control and that is US."

The she launched into the sins of America on other things from a religious context and so on.

Was an interesting night but I was surprised to hear my brother say he totally understood as he was an old school dem and those today he sees just bash us and then say vote for us. My brother is the 'black sheep' to some in the family as he is both catholic and democrat (whereas most are baptist and republican that were there today).

Another point I brought up was introspective analysis and growth we need as a people - and how history has beared that out (we saw things were wrong, called them out, fixed them). If we want to continue to grow and progress we must examine the negatives and work on correcting them.

At any rate - was one of those nights and I have seen the more fundie version of how some people see us. Not sure I convinced anyone, but it was all civil though I could tell a few were getting pissed. We finally changed the topic to mom (who passed on 12/31) and some stories about her.

1. You keep trying to make your country better. The rest of the world
does every day. Why not the USA?

2. Vote Democrat: It's easier than working!
one of my favorite bumper stickers that I've seen. It was on a truck that was by no means new. I am willing to bet that it belonged to a hard working man, one who has swallowed whole this accusation that liberals want to put lazy poor people on welfare on the taxpayers' dime. Meanwhile, he and all the rest of us are working harder and for less than our peers abroad. And for what? So CEO's and the military can stay well-fed?

4. Places and people are always in movement. Why work so hard
in elections just to go backwards or sideways? Why not go forward (not to the 19th Century like neocons want) but towards a better world.

Yes - must be tough to not see eye to eye with family at these times. But yes - keeping it about family is what family is about. Specially as parents age.

6. Parrots.
They don't really "see us." They just parrot the images that the Limbaughs and Falwells paint for them.

Education is their kryptonite. Try to teach them something, and watch 'em run. . . to Limbaugh and Falwell.
