TX: 6,492 drivers licenses mailed to the wrong people
So much for protecting one's personal info to prevent identity theft!

http://www.mysanantonio.com/sharedcontent/APStories/stories/D8ABGTLO0.html

The Texas Department of Public Safety has found that nearly 6,500 driver's licenses were mailed to the wrong addresses in the past eight months, 10 times more than reported last month. The agency said last month that 500 to 600 licenses had been incorrectly mailed in late March.

However, after inquiries from the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, the agency investigated further and found that 6,492 drivers received somebody else's card.

State officials blamed the mix-up on a malfunctioning machine that was recently installed to sort licenses for mailing. They are now saying human error had a part, as well, agency spokeswoman Tela Mange said.

A driver's license contains personal information that thieves could use to open up a line of credit or a bank account, make long-distance phone calls or apply for a Social Security card in that name.

1. What I want to know is...
why you have to wait to get your license there anyway? Here in La, you can get them on the spot, while in Tx, they give you a paper one to use until the real one comes in the mail.

Apparently here in Tennessee you can still get your licenses at the place after you take your test. I think the only thing that they mail to you is an updated licenses if you need/want one (like your picture is really old and you have changed or something).

5. Now imagine a National ID card in TX's bumbling hands/system
Either a separate ID card or if they put all the Nat'l ID personal info on our DL's...won't THAT be fun?? Frigging idiots. And all we will be told is "oops..human/machine error..sorry your SS#, picture, and your life history/numbers/demographics are out there somewhere.." Even if they retrieve such a card, who is to it has not been picked clean of all your private data?

6. No kidding.
How come Costco can give you a photo I.D. on the spot, and Texas takes weeks to get a new license to us?

8. My Form 1040 managed to make it to some couple's home in TX
They called me and told me they had my Form 1040. I was a bit confused. I gave them my address and they mailed it to me. Sure enough, it was the 1040 I filed and mailed to the proper address in TX. How in the world it got to a private individual's home hundreds of miles away I have no idea.

:scared:
