for the DU atheists on memorial day...
here's a monument in (of all places) Alabama. It is honoring those atheists that served in our country in the military.

4. sorry...did not mean to offend
I love Alabama, my family is all from AL, and I graduated from college there. It just really suprised me that you'd find this monument in the heart of the bible belt.

5. Oh gosh, no!
This is what happens when vocal tone is vital to a sentence's meaning. My apologies!

6. Not an atheist, but I love the sentiment--and thank them for the sacrifice
all the same.

I think it's wonderful, thanks for sharing it!

8. I'm an atheist, and I'm nominating this
I hope fellow atheists, agnostics, and free thinkers in general will join me.

We non-believers don't get a lot of respect in this country, even though our founders clearly felt that we should.

Our Constitution provides for freedom of religion. I respect all citizen's beliefs, for they are constitutionally protected just as mine are.

I won't judge others, as long they don't judge me

Thanks, sad_one, for posting this. I, for one, really appreciate it.

10. i rarely claim to be an atheist
because i have always perceived it as a 'stigma'. i agree with marx who said that 'religion is the opiate of the masses'.

anyway, sydney j. harris said it best for me in a column in the miami herald many, many years ago . . .

"what i wish i knew at 18:

that the atheist who believes in man and scorns god is closer to holiness than the religionist who believes in god and scorns man."

11. It's not the atheists that are the problem in foxholes.
It's the foxholes that they're put in that's the problem.

15. Thanks for posting this sad one!
It is good that there is a monument out there to help dispel the notion that there are no 'foxhole atheists'.
