Suspect Still Perched Atop Atlanta Crane
Edited on Fri May-27-05 02:40 PM by El Supremo
ATLANTA - A homicide suspect remained perched on an 18-story construction crane for a third day Friday, holding police at bay and causing a spectacle in the heart of the city's entertainment district....

I'm reminded of this from 'Best in Show':

Lemme tell you as an expert. They all jump. I'll tell you about this guy.... You see, you think they drop like rocks, they don't. He hit a gargoyle on the way down and this guy gets his head caught in the gargoyle's mouth. The head pops off like a grape. The body continues to spin down like a whirl-a-gig. When they hit, everything pops out. It's like a piñata The intestines, like they're spring-loaded, pop out.

1. This guy HAS to be getting tired....
sooner or later he's going to nod off, lose his grip and look out below. I'd say he has to be in some sort of manic state to stay up that long.
Come on down man, nothing can be that bad.

2. I suspect sooner or later, he'll lose his balance and fall...
intentionally or un-intentionally! I'm a bit surprised he hasn't fallen asleep already, but the more sleep deprived a person gets, the less stable they are.

6. They are blasting him with sirens and music and horns to keep him awake.
I'm sure that the neighbors are loving that Why can't they put a giant circus net under the crane and gently push him off? BTW, I live in Georgia and I've managed to avoid this story by not listening to any local TV or radio or corporate media.

5. Ok, as a citizen of GA having this unfold before my very eyes,
I would like to share something I heard on the radio this morning that pretty much sums it up for us now:

Barnes, on DaveFM, said: "I've got four notes for this guy" and starts playing the opening for Van Halen's Jump.

Enough is enough. Has the rest of the country figured out yet that Atlanta has a seriously inept police force? Just askin.......

8. They don't care how long he's up there.
They're worried about being sued if he falls or the cops screw up somehow.

10. Why don't they get ANOTHER crane
They could rig up some sort of trampoline contraption with side walls, and suspend it from the top of another crane. They position it several feet under him so that when he falls he falls on the trampoline and he can't get up the high walls. I suppose it would also be prudent to put netting under the length of the existing crane, in case he decides to shimmy down a few feet and then jump.

Final thought: this should allow CNN to completely abdicate the last vestiges of news remaining on their network. It's apparently one of those media frenzy sorts of events, and it's right in CNN's back yard. This is the perfect story for the constantly-devolving CNN.
