Bush-As-Groucho Posters Spark Uproar

1 hour, 22 minutes ago

LOS ANGELES - Posters that depicted
President Bush with a Groucho Marx-style mustache and cigar were ordered torn down at a high school after a student complained. Theater students, who had created the posters to advertise a satirical play, countered with new posters with a First Amendment message.

Principal Kenny Lee ordered 100 posters removed from the campus of El Camino Real High School in the Woodland Hills area last week on grounds that they promoted smoking and "endorsing one ideology over another."

The poster ban infuriated some students.

"It taught us that the First Amendment certainly does not guarantee the right of free speech," said Jes Shah, 16, a junior in the school drama program. The principal asked the drama students to come up with new posters. The new designs all feature a silhouette of Bush and a burning cigar, along with inscriptions such as "Free Expression for All (unless you are in high school)" and "What First Amendment?"

1. Well, I'm offended!
It's an insult to Groucho!!

I'm glad these kids responded the way they did -- hopefully their fellow students who had a problem with this will understand that the constitution exists outside of Civics class.

4. Gee Dubya Bush, Rufus T. Firefly, And Duck Soup
Anyone who's ever seen the Marx Brother's classic comedy Duck Soup knows that those high school students have struck within the center ring.

Who can forget Groucho/Firefly's song and dance routine with such lyrics as "If you think we're bad off now / Just wait 'til I get through with it?"

Who can forget Groucho/Firefly's tolerating Harpo/Chicolini's spying on Fredonia by Sylvania and not think of Gee Dubya's posse ignoring al Qaeda warnings and covering for the House of Saud?

Who can forget Groucho/Firefly's "We're Going to War" song and dance number and not think of what the incumbent administration was doing prior to invading Iraq?

Who can forget that scene when Groucho/Firefly, knowing that Fredonia was on the ropes, shouting "Help is Coming!", followed by such ludicrous film images as starting swim teams and stampedes? Who can't help but associate that scene with Buckaroo Bush's much-ballyhooed "Coalition of the Willing"?

I'd say that those kids hit a bull's eye if anyone cares to look!

   :kick:

6. Bush today issued Executive Order 23,666, that will make it a
felony to portray the President as anything other than a God.
