Question for those living in NYC
Hi all. I'm watching an Alex Jones film. The "9/11: Rise of the Martial Law". He's now in NYC for the republican convention and talking to various people about them coming. He's been in two cabs now and asked how many people like the republicans being in their city. According to the cab drivers only 10% of the city likes them being there. The other people have apparently left town for the few days they're there and hardly anybody is out on the streets. For those of you who live in NYC can you verify if this is true? I'm just really curious of course. :) Thanks in advanced. If the admins need to move this then that's fine with me.

Most people didn't like the convention because of the inconvenience it caused. Presidential motorcades, shutting down streets and the subways, demonstrations, police barriers, and all the rest that came with it.

The ones who are politically motivated participated in the process and actually enjoyed the opportunity the convention gave them to march against the administration and participate in the demonstrations and other activities.

The apolitical were just annoyed that it took them 2 hours to get across town while on any normal day it might take 15 mins.

The more bitter people were toward the administration the more willing they were to *stay* and join the masses outside the Garden (well, more like a few blocks away from it). Those who didn't care really (the majority, sadly) shook their fists at the air and were annoyed or chose to get out of town till all the hub-ub went away.

But being here during the convention was a nasty little preview of what life may be like if the Fundies are successful in establishing the Theocracy they are working so hard to achieve. It was a slap in the face to this New Yorker to have to host the Regressives.

5. Same if the Olympics come to NYC.

I'll bet my bottom dollar NYC will be a ghost town, as far as the "locals" go. I will say that during the RNC, it was noticably less crowded on the trains coming in from the outer Boroughs. Many did leave, though to be honest, late August is also the worst time to be in NYC, the weather is usually down right disgusting.

New Yorkers are by their nature quite adverse to outside crowds who don't understand the "system." NYC is one huge club, very disfuctional, but everyone knows the rules and respects them. Outsiders are not really welcome because they of course don't know or follow the rules and hell, they're not part of our disfuctional family so they can go screw themselves.

The RNC was also quite isolated, with most of the delegates not venturing beyond the range of 30-50th Street, site of convention, location of hotel and stupid tourist traps.

The old saying, "New York is a great place to live, only if you can afford to leave now and then."

A friend of mine is moving to the area this summer. :) I'm sure they wanted to have the RNC away from people. Oy. I'm glad I live in a medium sized town so I don't have to worry about something like that coming here. We're not big enough. ;) If you haven't seen the film you can at http://www.mininova.org

Ground Zero! After all that was the reason they hosted the convention here in the first place... to drench themselves in Patriotism and the assault on the American way of life.

:eyes: Can't forget that. 9/11, 9/11, Saddam Hussein is evil, 9/11, 9/11, smear John Kerry, 9/11. At http://www.bushflash.com they have a video flash of the convention. It's the RNC in sixty seconds.

11. The difference between the RNC and the Olympics:
We'd be willing to sublet our apartment to people coming for the Olympics.

I think we NY'ers are pretty open to people who come here in good faith. You want to see a Broadway show or the Statue of Liberty? Come on in! You want to come here to exploit the deaths of 3000 of my neighbors? Fuck the fuck off!

13. my experience...
leads me to believe that most left town. My son flew in to Newark smack in the middle of it all. I was really worried about traffic, etc.(I live in Queens) As it turned out, I got to Newark in record time. No traffic whatsoever. On a side note,, speaking of the motorcades.. chucklehead came to our neighborhood for a 15 minute photo op with the only FDNY union that would have anything to do with him. Our neighborhood was on lockdown for 4 hours. No one could be out on the street. We watched the motorcade go by from our very own grassy knoll. (You can imagine our thoughts,, heh) Better not to say.

17. Some of the attendees gawking in the streets
did remind me of the Nazi's sizing up artwork and properties that they would confiscate once they were truly in power. Kind of like in the film "Remains of the Day"... you know, "someday this will all be ours".

15. Some people left town, others had a different strategy....
they prepared for the Convention by stocking up on supplies, and then they holed up in their apartments for the duration.

20. No question, the RNC was very unpopular in NYC.
No question at all. It was inconvenient. It made security a nightmare. And most of all, New Yorkers HATED having the city cynically exploited by people who have demonstrated their interest in the city runs only as far as it offers them soemthing they can cynically exploit.

THING TO HAPPEN TO NYC.

......... Wait... Before You Jump The Gun And Flame Me........

I'll Tell You Why.

It gave everyone who was agaisnt Bush a chance to vent their feelings. I met a lot of people who travelled from all over the country to protest. I live close to Manhattan so it was easy to get to, much easier than humping it to DC. I found out how many people in New York were against Bush from all walks of life, even the very wealthy. All in all I'm glad it was here because it gave me plenty of opportunity to protest.
