Today's vote is a
shining example of why the Founding Fathers designed shorter terms in the House than the Senate. Because they have to run so much more often, they're forced to listen to their constituents (or at least pretend that they do) more often. No average American with half an ounce of common sense opposes stem cell research which does not involve tissue from aborted fetuses.
It's just that simple.
People of good conscience can disagree on other types of research and I have nothing but respect for people who struggle with the ramifications of that.
Sadly, I believe that the whole issue is moot because it's very unlikely that Frist wants to deal with this in the Senate, especially since he has said that the constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage won't receive a vote in 2005, nor will Social Security reform.
One can only hope. If Dick Cheney is content to have former First Lady Nancy Reagan speak about stem cell research from his podium just a few days ago, then we know for certain that at least
some of the less ideological righties get the message.
