N.C. church stands by sign saying Quran "should be flushed"

By PAUL NOWELL, Associated Press Writer

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- The pastor of a small Baptist church has refused calls to take down a sign posted in front of his church reading "The Koran needs to be flushed," saying Tuesday he has nothing to apologize for.

"My creed is the Bible, which tells me I am supposed to stand up and defend my faith," said the Rev. Creighton Lovelace, pastor of the 55-member Danieltown Baptist Church in Forest City. "I don't hate Muslims, I just hate their false doctrines."

But the Council on American-Islamic Relations, based in Washington, D.C., called on Americans of all faiths to demand the message displayed outside the church be removed.

"Christians often ask themselves, 'What would Jesus do?'" said the group's spokesman, Ibrahim Hooper. "I don't think Jesus, who is loved by Muslims and mentioned frequently in the Quran, would use such hate-filled and divisive rhetoric."

..more..

75. He may have won the REGION by a landslide, but if you look at the
Purple maps, Forsyth Co. (Winston-Salem) and Guilford Co. (Greensboro) are two of the more indigo counties in the area (more bluish than redish) and if you compare their color to Buncombe Co. (Asheville) they are approximate; with Asheville being slightly more blue than Forsyth or Guilford.

http://www.princeton.edu/~rvdb/JAVA/election2004/

you can go here to look at the gifs....they take up too much space on the board.

And yes, it's tobacco country, but it's also an area with a lot of highly educated people. It's considered an Arts city, with a couple of universities in town, Wake Forest being one.

So, please check your assumptions at the door.

Because Wake Forest the University is more likely full of Episcopalians than Baptist. The UberRich that send their kids to cache schools like Wake are generally not your average Baptist.

And what logic dictates that Baptist always = Conservative or didn't you get my memo on leaving your preconceptions at the door?

Anyway, sweetie, thanks for the clarification.

Our City Council is tilted to the right.

A fair amount of alternative vehicles here, lots of bike riding but no bike paths.

The police have roughed up and arrested peace protesters and were not held accountable. Over 40 protesters have been arrested since the US invaded Iraq. For a small city we have had some pretty large protests.

EXTREME RWingnut Senator Charles Taylor has his office here and continues to be reelected.

As a whole the city is considered pretty safe for gays.

The Fundie "we Still Pray" movement is based in this area. You see the bumper stickers all the time.

Yep, it's definitely a love/hate relationship I have with this state. I grew up around the worst bigots and the most loving liberal people and most of them dirt poor. So it wasn't money or education that drove them to their leanings. Who know what does it? If we could bottle it we'd be millionaires.

How's about I send some Carolina BBQ sauce instead? A friend of ours who lived here for a year or two, still orders some up to IL when outdoor cooking comes into season.

Why is it acceptable to call the dominant religion of jesusland stupid, but we have to 'respect' a religion that denegrates women? Can't we all acknowledge that they deserve equal treatment, preferrably ignoring them? I'm all for free speech rights for everyone, including bible-thumpers I disagree with.

59. Pulitzer
An able, disinterested, public-spirited press, with trained intelligence to know the right and courage to do it, can preserve that public virtue without which popular government is a sham and a mockery. A cynical, mercenary, demagogic press will produce in time a people as base as itself. Our Republic and its press will rise and fall together. ~ Joseph Pulitzer~

Love the quote. But he still turned out my wife's grandmother's family of nine the week after her husband died of a heart attack. Seems Pulitzer didn't feel the need to take care of the family of the man who'd taken care of his gardens in ME for years and years.... Told them to leave in the same note that conveyed his 'condolences'! Maybe the 'people' he was referring to were his 'social equals' and not the 'blue collar' working man of Maine?

87. Then you're not familiar with the works
that these religions come from. The Hebrew scriptures are practically a war manual in certain passages. Same with the koran, it goes even further in how to treat unbelievers. The christian scriptures have long been used to oppress people.

Yes, there are various degrees of twisting involved, but its not that tough to use the texts of any of the western religious traditions as an excuse to kill or hate the "other".

84. Absolutely
Most forms of christianity have denegrated women, and some clearly still do. But we've been able to throw off much, if not most, of the damage that christian misogyny has done within our civil law. In islamist societies, women's testimony is officially one-fourth that of men (try bringing a sexual harassment lawsuit in Saudi Arabia!), and they don't have the vote in the vast majority of those societies.

We're systematically flushing the bible from our laws, at least where it makes no sense from a human dignity standpoint, why not flush the koran, too, from the places where it oppresses people?

85. And this differs from every other religion in what way?
To me, all religion is delusion. But some delusions affect only the person who believes in them, some have a much wider scope when those delusions cause their immediate sufferers to impose the suffering on those who don't hear the voices in their heads.

It wasn't Presbyterian church ladies who crashed jet planes into the WTC, indiscriminately killing thousands of people. It's difficult for me to see people here who rightly decry the damage done by fundamentalist christianity, yet give a free pass to the islamics. The argument of "It's their culture," doesn't pass with me. Its part of many cultures to have sexism, racism, homophobia, slavery, economic exploitation, and militarism, but that doesn't mean I should write other people's rights off, just because they live on a different continent. If the person who lives next door to me is my brother and/or sister, why isn't the person who lives on the other side of the globe? If I demand justice for the person living across the street from me, why shouldn't I want it for someone living under an islamic theocracy?

And his stupid message put his church briefly on the map.
It is worth noting that at least people are paying attention and expressed outrage over the sign. There is not much happening in his neck of the woods, lost textile and other jobs/poor economy etc.
The "Rev" was going to be on a local talk radio show but it was canceled due to the amount of controversy around the "issue".

52. here's a link

I'm not religious either -- and find this "my religion is better than yours" really, well, unreligious. I happen to work with very conservative religious folks, and since there are so many of them, I just keep quiet (though once I went off about gay marriage and human rights and some ears I wasn't expecting to hear, heard. C'est la vie)

Someone here at DU had a thread about "countering" the fundamentalists... and after a brief search I found that bumpersticker as well these others at the above link. You might look around with the phrase in Google -- there may already be a teeshirt.

56. Yes Tolerance... a wonderful human value - or so one would think. In Ohio
(as well as other states) the "gay marriage ban" was on the ballot in November. I wrote a simple letter to the editor (which was published).

It went something like this:

Why are people afraid of

Tolerance
Love
Commitment

Vote No on Issue 1!

of course they ran all of the words together so you didn't "see" the TLC really.... but I'm glad they did run it.

61. He should be flushed!
The Jews, Christians and Muslims all worship the SAME god - the god of Abraham. Says right there in the Old Testament, which all three religions recognize. So they call him/her/it "Yaweh," "God" or "Allah"; all three are simply language names for the same concept. That yokel and his like should be flogged with a large handful of left over Easter palm fronds for being dimwits. Then they should be forbidden to ever preach again.

All religions are true, it's just that man has tweeked an manipulated the great writings of prophets in the past to fit their own needs.

123. bottom line:
thanks for taking the time to respond,

Actually for me this not a matter of one religious doctrine or another.

Personally I am able to have my own opinion about organized religions in general and not project those opinions as hate speech.
I really don't see masses of people basing their dogma & doctrines around a single charismatic historical character as helpful toward allowing the world's peoples to live in peaceful coexistence and tolerance. I think the world might well be better off without the Quran or the Bible.
Still it not my place to tell another what to believe.

I consider it completely unacceptable for anybody to use inflammatory language and hate speech toward others and there is no doubt in my mind that the Reverend's sign and staements are hate speech.
Any sane community would shun and ostracize such a person.

128. I have to defend the Pastor here
I think it politically incorrect, and perhaps better stated in a sermon to the faithful rather than on a sign. But the past is fundamentally right (no pun intended).

He has an absolute right before God and under the Constition to diffenentiate his faith from that of non-Christians. SHould he be tacky about it.. Of course not...because Jesus would not be tacky about it.

But does any one really believe that Jesus would endorse any religion other than his own?
