75. My guess is how
Bush thought a lot of republicans would vote against it. Now that he didn't get enough votes to veto it he'll have to vote for it and lose a lot of his fundie base or he'll veto it and make a lot more people angry. Tough call indeed. So what is he going to do? Hmm. It'll be interesting to see. I remember Bush one time saying he always means what he says, so he can't go back on his word or it'd make him look weak. The democrats came out strong on this bill and if he does sign it to a lot of his base he'll be seen as weak and to another part of his base he'll seem heartless. I love it!

it was obvious to me that the majority of the opponents were pandering to the Christian Right. I didn't find their arguments convincing at all and most repeated the same nonsensical talking points. I was especially irked by the very slick Rep. Pence, who also spoke out against the bill on talk shows. I sent him an e-mail pointing out the obviousness of his political aspirations at the expense of people suffering and dying of chronic illnesses.

37. Bush is in trouble when he has to use the veto against a GOP Congress
In Bush's second term it seems that a the Republican Party has really started to fracture. 50 Republicans in the House voting against Bush and Delay on stem-cell research is a very telling sign.

It seems that northeastern Repubs are beginning to break away from the conservative base, just like southern Dems broke away from the Democrat's liberal base in the '60's. Is another political realignment in order?

It should pass in the Senate.

Bush will surely veto, but it comes back to Congress again for another vote. Maybe they can drum up 50 or so more votes from Republicans by then. This is a very popular bill.

56. Guys! This bill serves up in two wonderful ways politically!
1. If Bush vetoes this, then he further alienates himself from mainstream America. His approval rating will drop even further.

2. If Bush signs the bill, he will alienate his psycho-religious base.

This is a win-win for Democrats.

60. I agree wholeheartedly. I want a bit of revenge against Shrub for ...
trying to kill the research. How many have and will die because of his lack of vision?

92. Two Democrats from my state were among the 14.
Oberstar and Peterson. I'm very disappointed with them.

Unfortunately the rep where I live (for now, in AZ) voted Nay... fucking Rick Renzi, or as we Dems in Flagstaff call him, Prick Renzi.

86. To clarify
Renzi is a repuke... although our district went with Kerry by a wide margin, and this city is majority Dem. Go figure.

Ah well, I welcome this development, and hope it isn't short-lived.

89. It's great news.
It would be better if we had 52 more votes.

Prayers and general good vibes tonight to those suffering from diseases that could be cured by such research. Hopefully you'll get the treatments you need and deserve someday soon. :)
