ALERT! "Al Zarqawi reported wounded in Iraq!"

Al-Qaeda's group in Iraq said its leader Abu Musab al-Zarqawi had been wounded but that would only serve as an inspiration to step up its attacks against "the enemy of God."

"O nation of Islam. Pray for the healing of our Sheikh Abu Musab al-Zarqawi from an injury he suffered in the path of God," said a statement from the Al-Qaeda Organization for Holy War in Iraq. Its authenticity could not be verified.

It was the first such statement by the group claiming that its leader, behind most attacks against U.S. forces in Iraq, had been wounded. The language of the statement suggested that his injuries could be serious.
