Do RW fundies even READ the bible?
Taking a hint from today's article, I decided to look up some Bible verses, and these struck me as quite ironic:

1"Be careful not to do your 'acts of righteousness' before men, to be seen by them. If you do, you will have no reward from your Father in heaven.

2"So when you give to the needy, do not announce it with trumpets, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets, to be honored by men.

5"And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by men.

1"Do not judge, or you too will be judged. 2For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.

15"Watch out for false prophets. They come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ferocious wolves.

22Many will say to me on that day, 'Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and in your name drive out demons and perform many miracles?' 23Then I will tell them plainly, 'I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!'

Oops; apparently the bibles they read don't have those verses in them.

Or, they just cherrypick parts of the bible they agree with.

1. Exactly. They love to accuse liberal believers of cherrypicking but
they do it too.

2. They'll counter with something else
Fundies are HIGHLY trained in specific verses to back up their actions even if they make no sense to you and me.

They'll argue that Christ wasn't a pacifist and was actually very violent, and was in favor of war. They'll mention verses and really earnestly believe it.

3. Both sides cherrypick. But the Left picks right from the words of Jesus.

Where as the Right tends to pick from Leviticus (homosexuality is an abomination), Numbers, and Revelations (the real "firey wrath of god type stuff" as Dan Akryod once said). It'd seem to me that the strongest arguments would quote Jesus himself. . . but what do I know, I'm just a damn heathen.

4. And when these sermon quotes of Jesus are mentioned to....
....fundies their eyes glaze over, and then fill with red rage as they fire back other chapter and verse quotes from the bible, usually having to do with blasphemy, fornication, homosexuality and abortion.

5. No. If you quote it to them...
they become confused and angry, and start yelling at you.

So I like to do it.

6. Bill Moyers wrote a great article in January I...
that used statistics gathered over the last 5 years or so which indicate that most Americans probably haven't read much of the Bible. yet recent polls estimate that approximately one-third of Americans accept the contents of the Bible as literal truth.

I know my conservative Christian relatives believe things are Biblical because their pastor has told him that when it couldn't be further from the truth. My RW fundie relatives read those parts of the Bible they are instructed to read and ignore the rest. I can't speak for any others.

9. Hmmm. So they tell you what parts of the Bible they read?
Are you there when they read their Bibles? Just exactly how do you know that they are purposefully ignoring certain parts? Just trying to be argumentative here.

12. Because I was raised in the same church they were.
And attended the same services and same VBS. As I said, I cannot speak for anyone but my fundi relatives. But yes, these Southern Baptists were very much directed into what parts of the Bible to "study" and are taught that non-Biblical theological ideas are Biblical.

11. No, they don't, and it really burns this Christian/Buddhist/Jedi up.
I love love love to call them on their crap by quote the bible, I even shut a deason up last year. It was great, I said blessed are the peacemakers and then he said that it didn't apply to war or politics, it applied to people like me (I had just stopped a verbal fight between him and a gay guy). I told him that the bible makes no distinctions and he gave up.

However I did appreciate that he thought that I was a peacemaker.

All in all he is a nice guy, but he is obviously confused about his own religion.

10. Fundamentalism started out as an anti-intellectual endeavor
They see the entire world as evil and getting progressively worse, so they must turn to the "inerrant" words in the bible to reinforce their narrow world view. In other words, they can't pay attention to the positive messages because if it is not the end-times, and the rapture is not imminent, they will have to face what their president has done to the world they will still have to live in. You can't debate anything related to faith with them (because that requires logical examination), and anything you do say just reinforces their notion of the sinfulness of our age...I gave up trying, you can't argue with sheep!
