U.S. covering up mad cow cases, scientist says

http://www.ctv.ca/servlet/ArticleNews/story/CTVNews/20050412/whistleblower_madcow_050412/CanadaAM?s_name=&no_ads=

A scientist and former inspector for the U.S Agriculture Department says he's willing to take a lie detector test to back his claim that his government is covering up mad cow disease.

Friedlander said he knows U.S. Agriculture Department veterinarians who sent suspect cow brains to private laboratories that confirmed mad cow infection, but samples from the same animals were cleared by government labs.

"It's several veterinarians that have given me similar stories about sending cow brains in,'' he said in an interview Tuesday. "It might be shocking for Canadians but it wouldn't be shocking for veterinarians that have worked for the USDA.

Hansen said there appears to be a great lack of eagerness to detect mad cow in the United States.

1. I'm absolutely convinced that's true.
Mad cow disease has been here much longer than we ever knew about. Small ranchers who have wanted to test all their cattle, have been forbidden to do so, because the lack of testing among other ranches would cast them and their products into suspicion - and hurt the market.

I've stopped using bonemeal as a calcium supplement for my dogs, and recommend that if you use bonemeal in a gardening capacity, that you wear an allergy mask while applying it. Also, stay away from ground beef unless it's certifiably organic; the machines that pick every last shred of meat from the bones, often include some nervous and spinal tissue, which harbors the disease. Slabs of muscle meat are relatively safe in comparison.

Here's the seminal book on the topic:

I know I've posted this a couple of times before, but I think it bears repeating every now and again.
